Been used for years on BMW, Aprilia and Ducati amongst many others , the top adjuster is preload and the lower black adjustment ring will be either rebound or compression damping

wow....cheers guys for the quick response. think I might have a punt at one....my wilburs 540 only has the spring, no other adjustment....looking to upgrade now.

I run the standard shock, as in your picture. It is sufficient for me, because I am not a very descerning or able rider. Most owner ditch them for Wilbers, Hyperpro or Ohlins..... YSS have been mentioned too. The forks also benefit from being worked on, apparently. Personally, I can't see the point. They do for me, but I am not a hooner.

I think Denzo at T-Tech suspension rebuilds the original Sachs and adds some tweaks which I'm told vastly improve on the original which is pretty soft and wallowy as standard. The Wilbers should be a significant improvement and maybe just needs setting up for your riding conditions and weight - spring etc, which Denzo/T-Tech could also do.
I have a Wilbers on my Guzzi (and cant fault it) and have a 2nd hand Wilbers for the XCo, which I am about to send to T-Tech for overhaul and set up for me then fit on the XCo when Spring approaches.....

I like that rear reservoir bracket - good solution and gets it a little bit further away from the exhaust heat. I am a Wilbers fan-boy though!

OK guys don't really want to send my wilburs 540 back to factory to be fettled with looking to go a different route. has anyone got a rear shock one with pre load adjustment etc....ohlins, hyper pro, for an xchallenge taking up garage space lol they want to move on ?

suggest dont go the wilbers 642 route. Great shock but not enough space between the reservoir and the exhaust, however you try and flex or mount the exhaust. I've ended up wrapping the reservoir in plumbers heat cloth to try prevent, or at least slow down the rubbing, as it eventually wears the reservoir casing

cheers Gareth....I have read somewhere they are incredible tight fit. Still looking for used ohlins at right price

hi gents....still looking for a rear shock any make considered now.....cheers

Why not ask Lukas at T-Tech if he can upgrade your Wilbers 540? He recently serviced mine 642, which also has a longer line to the remote reservoir, and added some valving and piston upgrade all for just under £200. I expect he could rework your Wilbers and set up for your use and you wouldn't need to adjust anything. Or he can rework your original Sachs. Id contact him and see what the options are.

thanks bbb.might give him a bell. was really after a different shock one with a remote reservoir one that I can adjust and set up for longer trips. thanks again

Long shot I know but I have a Maxton shock with a remote preload adjuster on it taken off my 1250 GS.

The guys at Maxton are super helpful maybe be worth a call.
