As an old git who thought he had finished with bikes, fed up with fireblades, i am fast warming to the prospect of owning a proper
'sit up' bike, the GS 1150 seems to fits the bill.

My problem is trying to determine value , if i look at all the adds in bike trader or e-bay
you see the same bikes advertised over and over again,eg, a 2000 non ABS asking £6 k

I have heard of existing owners who say they have only been offered £4 k for a 2002 with 20k miles bike with £1 k worth of extras against a new 1200 by the BMW dealer

So where is the middle ground? my thoughts were that a private sale bike in good condition, with history, and a clean past should be about 'middle' book (glasses guide)

And yet my example above at £6k retains 80% of its residule after 5 years ?
and the 3 year old model at the dealer looses 50 odd percent?
while i do realise the dealer has to make a living, why are the private bikes so expensive ? I am not having a 'pop' at anyone trying to sell their bike, just struggleing to understand the GS market , constructive comments welcome
thanks
great site,nice banter

Loses 50% at trade-in maybe, but the dealer's gonna be knocking it out at 85% of it's residual.

GS's are still sought after, and people will pay the prices that private sellers are asking.

pomm001......I've taken the liberty of shifting your thread into what will probably be a more appropriate section to get good answers.

Welcome aboard....I haven't follwed prices too much since I bought mine (quite deliberately actuallly ;) )but whatever you end up buying, it'll make you grin like no other bike :thumb

I paid £5,150 in May 2004 for a Y Plate / 2000 non ABS, non Heated Grips 1150GS. Came with system panniers, 45ltr Givi top box, stainless Y piece & Remus can. Bike had a few months T&T left on it and had 24,074 miles on it at time of purchase. It's now on 39,140.

My girlfriend bought a 51 plate / 2001 1150GS in March of this year. Came with system panniers, ABS, HG, H&B crash bars, Y piece & Remus. Very clean & tidy and low mileage (10,500 miles). She paid £5,900 & is very happy with it, now on 12,??? miles.

I agree that there's a disparity in the pricing second hand bikes. In my experience those that are overpriced rarely sell. I can tink of a few bikes that tokk months to sell this year. There's enough for sale to get a good idea of the going rate.

Blimey, that was a bit of a bargain! I got £5,300 for my W reg, 33k 1150 (albeit with grips and ABS). And that was part exchange against a 1200.

He wanted £5,600 with a standard exhaust, no panniers & no top box. I wanted the whole lot, Y-piece & Remus were already on the bike, so I offered £5,000 & agreed on £5,150.

My '99 T reg 1150 just went for £4625. It had the ABS and heated grips. I sold it with the standard exhaust, no panniers, but it still had the Givi rear rack, H & B crash bars and Rob Farmers light kit. It also had an Ohlins rear shock.

I believe the ABS and heated grips do increase the second hand values a fair bit.
