satnav & autocom

just to ask,do you think it is ok to wire the satnav and autocom direct from the battery???? on all the other bikes I have had,(and there has been a few) this has been ok on those bikes,but this is my first bmw,will this be ok to do this????

well some don't take power direct from the battery,but to use power sockets?
not sure if it will drain the battery,as the autocom will be live all the time,the satnav would not be live until you plug the satnav in.

There's a special socket around the headstock where you can feed your satnav from. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117400

I'm not sure about your Autocom, although I wouldn't have thought you'd have any problems wiring it directly to the battery with an in-line fuse connected.

foto john,thanks for that m8,looks like the way to go,the A.Com has it's own inline fuse,so that will be ok,

I got the dealer to do it for me when I bought the bike, but the autocom power lead is conected to the rear of the power socket.

This way it is only live when the ignition is on.

BTW autocom say it should be fitted to a swiched live. so off the battery is not good.

If you are going to listen to satnav instructions via the autocom make sure you get the right feed cable to the autocom. If they are both powered by the bike you can get a bad buzzing (ground loop I was told). Can't remember the part number but the autocom chap was very helpful.

I've not got a 1200 myself, but I believe that the recommended power connection is from the back of the accessory connector.

Like i said, this is my first bmw, first non sportsbike!!

A bike with a power socket!, whatever will they think of next, heated handgrips??

For a more "permament" connection, pick up the switched feed to the back of the accessory socket, and use this to trigger a relay which switches ina fused direct fed from the battery.

That way, you're not powering everything from the socket, nor in danger of forgetting to switch off if hotwired to the battery.
