Scabby Final Drive Paint & Corrosion

My rear end is looking a bit scabby with paint flaking off and corrosion bubbles.

What is the best way to sort this out?

Can it just be swapped for a new/better condition second hand unit?

Would it be better to keep it as is and just repaint it or powdercoat it after giving it some sort of corrosion treatment?

If you opt for swapping it with another unit be aware that the final drive for the later 2007 on bikes will not be compatible with the 2004-6 servo ABS bikes. The later bikes have a different ABS ring inside the final drive which will bring up fault codes if used on the earlier servo braked bikes.

If the drive is mechanically good, Dremel the rough paint until there is no corrosion. Maybe treat the area with wheel cleaning. When dry, acid etch prime and and fill level with the original paint. Flat the lot with fine wet/dry paper and repaint.

If the drive is mechanically questionable have it full stripped down. Chemical strip the paint and powder coat the casing. Then have the drive rebuilt. You could flat the powder finish and paint with rattle cans to match the original finish or live with the powder coat finish.

BMW dont help with paint cans or paint codes. Has anyone found a standard car colour that matches with standard GS frame and swing arm paint?

I have such a paint coide for the rocker boxes but these are a different colour to the bodywork.

I had to touch in a small chip on the frame of my 2010 GS TC & used a touch up from Citroen - Touch up is part no. 999307 & the aerosol is part no. 999107 (twin pack 1 paint & 1 lacquer) this seemed a good match but it was only a small area so if you do try it apply it to an area out of sight to see what you think. HTH Oh the colour code is EZR (Aluminium Grey)

Silver smooth Hammerite is a very good match for frame and engine / gearbox / swing arm / bevel box. But make sure you use an etch primer as well.
