Hi All,

I've been viewing the UKGSER website a lot more since buying my GSA late last year and I'm seeing a LOT of posts about all of the things that can go wrong with a GS. I know that this is a site where owners come for help and advice but am I picking up a load of mixed messages?

On one hand the GS is designed to be a bullet proof machine that can ride round the world running on swamp water, but I find myself worrying that my ESA suspicion will fail, my engine will corrode into dust if it gets splashed with road salt, or my gearbox will fall out after an extra loud clonk.

Owning and riding a GSA has made me a very happy man so I suppose I'm looking for a bit of reassurance that I've done the right thing.

If you need smoke blowing up your arse for your excellent. Choice of bike well done. As you have already stated, you love the bike. Not everything has perfect to be enjoyed. The term (more than the sum of there parts) springs to mind when talking about BMW, s. Ride and enjoy.

Pal of mine is a guide for world of BMW. He regularly does mega rides with a lot of different bikes but particularly GS's.
He says that yes, they have some issues, but no more than another make, and a damn sight less than most.

Do the scheduled maintenance, preferably yourself, and then enjoy it.

If you find you are worrying excessively then do some charity work for those less fortunate than yourself and gain some perspective.

I bought my new in October 2011 and had all the same worries, I've now done 13000 trouble free miles. Some people get a good one, some a not so good one.

Good - ride it & enjoy it; regular servicing & maintenance will keep it right, but if something does goes go wrong, fix it

BTW - Mikey is a top bloke and knows his stuff

They're good but....

How can I put this?!..... They ride good and much of the technology is good through many years of gradual evolution, and in places over engineered, however, they are not perfect, and neither is any other make of bike.

Sorry if I've shattered any bodies delusions, however, after a failed rear ESA, exhaust valve-flappy-thing, and fuel strip in less than 2 years, I'm a realist.

I still really like my GSA mind (just make sure I keep the warranty up tho!!)

I suspect that every bike forum in existance is a dumping ground for every problem , niggle, issue associated with said bikes. It's a wonder there are any bikes still running and on the road.

Every marque has it's problems. GSXRs need new brake master cylinders. ZX10s need a new frame. Hayabusas need new subframes. ZZR600s spit out 2nd gear. ZZR1100s throw the 3rd rod out of the cases. ZZR1200s eat cam shafts. Toyotas (I know it's a car) need something to do with the brakes. Ducatis were recalled for something. Harleys are just shit

Buy a GS. Ride a GS. Enjoy it. Just don't worry about it.

The solutions to every problem are on here somewhere..

These things are whole lot of electricity, metal and plastic held together with nuts, bolts and screws assembled by low paid Germans.
Of course something will go wrong.
It is the frequency and way we as owners deal with these occurences that defines the bike to us and those who dont own a BMW GS.

Just out of curiosity when were you intending to ride around the world through swamps ?
