SCREAMING SCREENS

I'm a similar height to you and tried a few screens on the bike before finding the MRA Vario which I found worked brilliantly.

The adjustment available from the sliding top section and the air gap between the sections totally eliminated buffeting and I found it possible to ride at 70 plus (on non public roads officer:augie ) with the visor fully open.

Roger, looking at their site the 1200GS quotes the dimension of 500mm for the varioscreen maxi, is that fully up or down?

Cheers :)

Hi Wingit.

There's a lot of experiences out there, this is mine. Standard screen - buffet doing my head in in every position (5' 11", ARAI). I tried Tobinators - useless for buffet, and I couldn't get the full range of lock on the handlebars - pathetic. Sold them. Got a Wunderlich mini screen - great for my 16-mile commute - face in the wind, a lot quieter than the screen. But on a long trip I thought it might be a bit of a struggle with headwinds. I got hold of a Nippy Norman high screen. Better than standard and you really notice the difference between fully forward and fully aft. I rotated my handlebars and adjusted the master cylinders (forward) so that I got the most 'lean-forward' attitude without compromising lock. In a stiff headwind I get a lot of buffet but the screen protects me from the wind pressure. In normal conditions it is a lot better. I've heard that the GSA screen is the best but I lack the conviction to spend that much money. I recommend you don't waste you time with Tobinators (oh, I hope I don't start an avalanche of comment with that one!). I'm back from my long trip now so I'm going to re-fit the Wunderlich.

Hope this helps

I can sympathise with anyone having problems with the GS Screen, as I myself am. I found the Standard Screen to be just about the worst riding experience of any of the 20 odd bikes I have owned. I am currently trying a Wunderlich Ergo and so far this too does not impress. Iv,e never had such a problem with any of my previous Bikes, the GS just seems to be unique in this recpect, well to me at least. With a long trip due to commence in three weeks to Spain and France I am thinking re-planning my routes to keep off Motorways in an effort to save myself the punishing and battering I am getting at anything over 50 mph. Whats the point of having a bike which otherwise is reasonably comfortable and is capable of cruising at 80 mph when the ergonomics of the thing just about make that impossible. This trip will be a tester and if it fails it "will" be going. Wish I,d kept my Futura !!.

hi Wingit,

I've started quite a few threads on this issue. I'm 5'9" and found the GS to be akin to sitting inside a wind tunnel. I don't have a big problem with turbulance, simply noise.

Fankly I think each cure is a personal thing, some work for some people, and not for others. What I have done is look at the total picture, that has to include many posibilities such as:-

type of screen,
screen setting,
laminar lip type extenders,
helmet type,
good earplugs,
winglets
torbinators

the above is in no order of preference, but all can get you a little bit quieter. So far I have got the laminar lips, a fair inprovment, good earplugs are probably the best single aid (but that is not making the noise go away simply shutting it out) and a new helmet (schuberth seems the agreed best choice in tests for niose reduction.

I'm now looking at winglets.

good luck.

My latest attempt at screen silence after a new NN screen, Tobinators, TT screen spoiler, different helmet, visor, Laminar Lip etc.......and none of em worked at all. 6'0" rider around 14 stone. Waiting for the edging strip from http://www.saeng.com/4000.htm If this combnation dont work I am considering getting rid of the bike. (L Lip and the edging strip) I wear plugs as a matter of course, but this buffeting is doing my head in after 12000 miles in the last 14 months. If I stand up into the air flow things quieten down to a steady whoosh so I know it aint the helmet. (Shoei Multitech) Tried the screen in every available position (including non standard as I have modified the original clips) with the Laminar Lip and in evey position without the Laminar Lip.

Really hacked off I have spent so much money with all the useless aftermarket shit.....I get a wee bit of tinted perspex from my industrial neighbour for nowt and £2.60 worth of P clips as per pic. Initial results from the road suggest I may be onto something here.

Crikey WGD 1340, you deserve a medal for persistance and not giving up.I am truely in the same frame of mind. It,s a shame that what is otherwise a great bike is spoilt by this common problem. Yesterday I tried removing the Screen alltogether and having a blast down the local A19. Nice consistant smooth airflow but because of the bolt upright riding position I reckon I would never be able to hold on for more than 20 minutes let alone an eight hour run down French Autoroutes. Looks like I have in fact bought the wrong Bike. I previously had an Aprilia RST1000 Futura which toured brilliantly. luggage space equalled the GS, comfort excellent (the Wife said the pillion was the next best to an LT). I had Helibars fitted due to a Neck Problem and I could sit there all day at 80mph in smooth airflow. You did feel it a bit coming up behind Trucks and Vans but that didn,t last for long. Only downside of that bike was fuel consumption dropped to the low forties at 80 plus. This screen problem together with all of the other possible GS failures lurking to spoil our day is just about the last straw and replacement is on the cards.
Regards.

Hated the screen...

I had so many problems with screens in the couple of years I had my GS that last year I went and bought a 1200RT.

A really different beastie to the GS - after a year with the RT, I think I probably preferred the GS as a bike (ignoring the screen) and would love to one day get back on one.

However, the electrically adjustable screen on the RT is just unbelievably brilliant. Every time I go out on the bike, I find the ability to raise and lower the screen at the click of a button a real joy... The screen is superb. The RT handles really well and is great bike to ride - I still miss the absolute fun and grin inducing feeling of riding the GS - hope that one day, they get a screen that matches the excellence of the rest of the package.

I recently fitted a laminar lip to my 05 GS. I am 6'4" and with the standard screen the blast was straight at the visor. With the lip, the blast moved up to the top of the helmet (better) but the airflow seemed a bit more disturbed (worse). Overall, an improvement.

So, bought and fitted Saeng edging to the lip - no difference at all I am afraid. I am not sure it makes a lot of difference to the airflow with the splitter effect of the lip.

My next option is going to be messing around with some polycarbonate sheeting (I have quite a lot of scrap sheet available) to extend / alter the lip and see how it goes. I am not really convinced that the odd shape of the GS screen, together with the lip is really going to make for a smooth airflow.

I also just bought a used Cee Baileys screen (high & wide) from a fellow Tosser, so when this arrives there are a whole new set of things to try (CB alone, CB + Lip, CB + Saeng, CB + lip & Saeng etc.).

Determined to get this to work as it is the only major issue I have with the bike.

When I got my 57 GS I couldn't believe how bad the turbulence and wind noise around my helmet was at anything above 45-50 mph with the standard screen. Being 6' 5" one expects things to be awkward at times...

After reading through the multitude of screen threads I decided to go for a Cee Baileys high and wide (22" H x 20" W) with the wind wings. It wasn't cheap at $432 but I bought it when the dollar was at its weakest and had it shipped to a hotel I was staying in when on a trip to the US, so I think it ended up at ~£200.

I have to say it revolutionised the riding experience for me. You do partially look through rather than over the screen which took some getting used to (and means you need to clean it quite often in the winter...). But I can now ride visor up at any speed and the only buffeting I get is when coming up behind lorries, vans etc. on the motorway.

Owen, I'd be surprised if you need to anything else other than install the screen and flog the lip!

Good luck, because as you say, other than that it's a great bike (although BMW quality leaves a bit to be desired).

As I mentioned in another post, turbulence (buffeting) is caused by "vortex shedding". The fix would be attach parallel vertical Perspex paddles on the sides of the screen. This would possibly ( but not necessarily) require some cutting & bracketry with the joins between the paddles & screen would need to be sealed. I have a spare screen & may have a go myself. I hereby claim the design/inventor rights if manufactured for profit...;)

Not sure I understand the problem having had naked bikes for twenty years

I'm 6'1" and have only got tobinators with standard screen. With a gap of about 4cm at the bottom and the screen fully forward it's great, with a little noise and no buffeting. Though I'd never ride without earplugs.

The bonus is that rain is blasted of the visor straight down. The downside is not being able to breath with the visor open:confused:

MRA VARIO

Hi

I have a 1100 and although I have had the bike for a few years the noise from the screen was really starting to bug me
I have been down this road many times with various bikes and never really found after market screens that work however I have just fitted the MRA screen to my bike and it does work, the best thing is that the adjustments mean that it can be moved around to fit the riders of various shapes and sizes.
