Screen Help

Considering a new screen for my 07 1200gs. I am 6' 2" and fancy either the Bm Adventure or the MRA Vario Touring. Can anybody advise please one way or another.

used to have the mra on my 07 gs and it is good, but found it a tad blowy so got the wunderlich ergo and couldnt be happier, its cheaper than the bmw adventure screen and looks pretty much the same

im shorter than you at 5'10 and get no buffeting from it, especially with the winglets for nippy norman fitted,

got the mra for sale of you fancy it
yours for £50

Thanks for the advice and the offer Jonyboy, but think I may have to do a bit more work and talk to a few more people before I splash out.

Standard BMW GSA screen on the GS

I fitted the GSA screen on my Gs some years ago; Straightawawy I noticed the difference - so much so that at first I found myself going into corners faster than before because of the lesser wind pressure.
It is not a difficult job to do and has been well written up on this forum before with parts list, drawings, prices etc..
It looks 'correct' on the bike and the extra support is also very useful to mount a GPS.It can be adjusted in the same way as the standard screen.
There are plenty of alternative screens available - but I think tht the extra support on the GSA screen is the important difference and it ensures that the screen is rigid. Thus the screen is better, but pricier as you would expect.

I am 6' 4" with an 05 GS. I got a Cee Bailey's screen second hand from this site and it works really well. This was after trying a laminar lip, without success. There are a lot of options with a wide range of prices and differing opinons on their effectiveness. Ideally, try and find some local Tossers with different screens fitted and give them a try - you will know if they are any good as soon as you hit the open road!

I'm 6"6 (with 32-33 inside leg - so most of my height in is my upper half). I too got a Cee Bailey's screen from this site, it was a couple of inches taller and a little wider, this has removed the constant buffetting, but I still get a lot of wind in my face, which I was hoping to get rid of. Also, I must say that without the buffetting, you hear the engine much more, which isn't necessarily a good thing. IMO - Boxers aren't really the nicest sounding engines, I think I need a better zorst to make it sound better.

But, all I have for a comparison is the standard screen and the CB, the CB is stiffer and clearer, and of better quality (it still flexs with engine vibes). Its a subjective thing, but most screens will be better than stock. SO, what I am saying is that it will help, but not exactly be car like levels of quietness!

Hi. I'm 6' and have just fitted an MRA vario touring screen to my 58 plate gs and its pretty good - you still get wind in your face but it has definitely removed the buffetting that I was getting with the stock screen. I can now ride with my flip helmet up at 60/70 without discomfort which is nice however I still get quite a bit of noise, perhaps more than I would have liked. On whole its not bad.

Thanks for that info Scottjo. It must be pretty good to let you ride visor up at 70 ish. It is the buffeting and I suppose the associated wind roar that bothers me with the standard screen. I don't like wearing ear plugs and am prepared to put up with a bit of noise accordingly, however I find the buffeting tiring on a longish run, so anything I can do to reduce/eliminate that would be a major bonus

As per Dan in post 6 above, the Cee Bailey's does not stop the wind blast, but does reduce it and significatly reduces the buffeting when compared to the standard screen. Visor down is required at any reasonable speed, at least with my Arai Viper.

I don't like ear plugs either and do not feel the need to wear them with this screen.

I would have to add that if you proceed at "70 ish" on the autioroutes here you will be amongst the old grannies, racing cyclists, caravans and probably a few horse drawn buggies. A slight exageration but it is really HARD work if you stay in the 'slow lane.' A normal GS with a rider of about 6' height should be able to cruise quietly and comfortably at an indicated 80 - 90 mph. Of course 80 (130 kph) is the limit, but allowing for speedo error you will find that around 85 will keep you on the outer lane, not overtaking all the time, and keeping an eye out for the odd car or bike coming up faster behind you.

Been through the lengthy list of alternative screens for an '08 GS and based on cost opted for a Nippy Norman high and wide (3 inches taller than original). Just ridden up to Parry Sound from Toronto (about 200 km total) with the new screen and delighted with the results. I'm 6' 2" and the wind blast is now directed entirely above my helmet (XD-3). Arrived a lot less tired than with old screen what with all the buffeting and today there were bad cross winds too.
A good product.

Thanks for the info Nick. Interesting to hear that you found an improvement in sidewinds. I am not sure that NN do the screen you have here in UK. The NN screen (High and Wide) here states 6" higher and also states " not for export out of Europe". Don't see that as a problem though, would not be a major task to trim a bit off if I found it too high. Take your point on the price too. I will post the final decision and result - good or not so good.

I tried a Puig high, NN high, and then a MRA vario.....
...once I added the winglets it was a great improvement...also fitted TT handguard extenders....
So, try winglets first as they are only 30 quid, then try a different screen...

Thanks for the info Jimbogs. I was intending to fit winglets just hadn't mentioned it, and was in two minds about the handguard extensions. I have gone ahead and ordered the extensions and will be ordering winglets today so I will take your advice and give them a try first prior to changing the screen.

i fitted a givi screen (the largest one) onto my 05 gs no more getting battered arround the head.flipfront helmet up at 70+ ,winglets are the best thing that you can buy for a gs at under 30 quid,oh and a alaska leather sheep skin but pad lol

had 2 GS 12's and never got on with he standard sceen on any setting. got a nippy norman (secdem i think it was ) and this was better but still not great. anyway got a 2008 gsa in oct and have to say this is by far and away the best of the lot. its a shame you cant try them all in advance , but i suppose you can at leats try the gsa if you talk to a dealer nicely - at least you will know whether it works for you.

Aerotrim

I've just installed an Aerotrim. I'm 6ft and have the seat set high. Prior to installing the Aerotrim I've had the screen to its lowest setting on motorways because it gives a more or less steady windblast. When riding round town the high setting has been better but anything over 30mph and I've had to close the visor. Some buffeting has always been present.

I stuck the Aerotrim on to start with, went for a ride and it was noticeably better, good enough for me to drill the screen to fix permanently.
Did 400 motorway miles over the week-end and I thought the result was good.

Great value compared to a replacement screen.

Fitted an MRA Vario to my 09 12GS yesterday.£96.00 delivered from Motorworks. Very pleased with it. Cruising up the A1/A19 last night,very windy conditions but happily pootling along at about 90/100. I'm 6'5", with the stock seat in the high position. Hav'nt played with the screen/spoiler positions yet. Quality is good,it's tinted and graduated to black at the bottom,looks cool and at that price.........it'll do for me.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I have found that you can read all the reports you can find but nothing beats first hand experience. just waiting on the winglets and hand guards being delivered. Will fit these asap and take it from there
