Seat foam bumps 2014 GSA

Only a thousand miles and my bike seat has gone the same way. Four bumps/lumps along each of the two seams. I also met a fellow 2014 Adventure rider last Wednesday and the rear seat on his bike was showing the same manufacturing fault. Not good!

I'd be more concerned if when I pushed the starter button the motor didn't spring in to life :augie

Me too but a defect is a defect and it is annoying just the same, Im glad the seat issue is only a minor fault and eventually I will end up with good seats. Im currently on my 3rd seat the dealer said they have no way of knowing if the new seats they are fitting are from the new batch or the old as the part numbers have not been changed. so if you have the lumps just keep getting them replaced until you have good ones

this time round I only had to change the front seat the rear is still ok.

Again it happens , according to some on here how dare you criticise substandard parts on a bike you have only paid £16,000 for.
How can you expect a used bike to look showroom fresh and unused when it has got up to 1000 miles on the clock, my god if bm bring out an updated 2015 gsa they will be rushing to chop in their old 2014 clunkers with 100's of miles on the clock to get the revised model.
Same ones who slagged off the obvious lack of riding ability and coordination of owners of 2013 bikes that had gearbox problems as the bikes could never be faulty.
ffs I have had 20 year old bikes with 50,000 miles on the clock where the seats and gearboxes and final drives have been perfect and I would be going ballistic if I bought a car and the seats or any other part of the interior began to wear before its first service.
BMW need to get their product development and quality of parts suppliers sorted out asap and those owners who can see no fault in the marque need to pull their heads out of their collective arses

Jeeez ..... so you would "go ballistic" would you?

What would you do if you had a 'real' problem?

Ram the vehicle through the supplying dealer's showroom window then kill the salesman who sold you it perhaps? :augie

Agreed and it's good to see that NOG are doing all they can to resolve the issue on your behalf

At the end of the day BMW do not make the seats and it is clearly a defect in manufacture that will eventually be sorted out. I bet you're just glad you didn't buy a new RT :D

I think BMW should introduce a card system. The first time you nit-pick about a seat seam undulation, engine character or pannier lock, you get a yellow card. Complain again and you get a red card. You are told feck off, banned from BMW showrooms and are not allowed to buy a BMW bike for three years.

I think I might have seen one of these undulations on my GSA seat but I can't remember. I probably don't notice it because my arse is generally in the way and I don't suppose that when I come to trade it in, the dealer will say he is going to knock £100 of because the seat has a bump.

No but if you wanted to sell it privately then the buyer might not agree, and will use it to knock your price down, apart from that having parted with 16K I expect things to be right, whatever the issue may be.
If you are happy to accept the deformed seat on your bike then that's up to you I for one am not and will continue to get replacements until resolved.

PS I've now covered 5000 miles in 3 months and enjoying every minute of it too.

It's quite simple really if you have a problem with a pair shoes for example you take them back and get them replaced. Parts of your bike are just the same and we as the buyer are exercising our right to get any issues corrected. And after spending my hard earned on whatever I expect it to be right.

NOG have been great with all the issues I have had. No problem has been to small and are definitely on the customers side. And I didn't buy my from them they just happen to be my local dealer.

Some of the comments on this thread like the one above never cease to amaze me.

I too have noticed these bumps. My bike has two of them on the riders seat and I will also be flagging this up with my dealer.

I guess some people are just happy to accept that there might be a small problem with their bike and others are not willing to accept any problems with their machine at all. This is why when you shop around for a used model you often find huge differences in the overall condition of the exact same model of bike. Some people just look after them better than others.

I for one, applaud my fellow bikers who expect the best from whatever model they ride and would encourage those of us who are not happy with the product to return it and have it sorted out. You've bought a new machine and its under warranty for a reason.

Just my opinion FWIW.

Terry, that was a very measured response to my provocative post. Good luck with the seat.

No problem and guess what both new ones have again developed the bumps, think I will show the dealer but wait a few months before getting them replaced, hopefully get the revised ones then. Think I shall do the winter then get some nice clean new ones ready for summer

Yep bumps apeared on my rear seat 10 days since collection, in for service tomorrow see what the dealer says :rob

Time for all you guys to get your seats swapped, then by the time I get another set I will hopefully get the new batch lol

I'm guessing that it's just the spare fabric on either side of the seam getting out of place (the same as happens on the seams on the hips of jeans) and instead of lying flat on both sides, one side gets turned over.
A little manipulation of the seam and fabric around the problem areas should put it back in place again.

Yes tried that nothing puts it right once they appear, maybe a seargent seat is the answer. The thing is I've had 3 sets now and I'm starting to feel a bit of a whinger taking it back all the time but I just want it to be right.
Apart from this and one other minor fault which is fixed
I've got no other issues so so far so good it's a great bike

It doesn't worry me - my BMW XCountry seat has a few 'seam bumps'

Does it alter the bike ?

Do I care ?

Not a lot :)

My guess is they use heat to weld the seam and the seam then becomes less elastic than the surrounding material. When you sit on it you stretch the seam and the material but the seam goes beyond it's elastic limit and doesn't return to its original length.

The bumps appear whether the seat is used or not. My pillion seat has bumps and it has never been sat on.
