What is the "Standard" seat position for the stock GS?

Mine came in the lower position and I have been blatting around like this and found it fine, just put it up and it looks quite dis-joined from the bike.

Was wondering what the point is, was the bike designed with the higher position, with the low option to help those who cannot reach the floor, is the higher position designed for off-roading?

I am tempted to leave it low as I am comfy like that and it should give more wind protection and it looks neater, any good reason(s) to put it up?

I don't think there is a standard position its just what suits, if your happy with the low position leave it there, same as mirrors and bars are adjustable , just whatever suits you

The low setting is good when you're getting used to the size and weight of the bike. Depending on your leg length, you might want to raise the seat later - not really so much for offroad, but more for long journeys because your knees are slightly less bent.

Give Joe Public a choice of two basic options.... And someone is bound to get confused.

Some bods have it high at the front and low at the back. Some even junk the original seat entirely. It's their way of striking a blow for individualism.

+1 to Womble's comment.

It's a bit like an airline seat - an extra inch or two of legroom doesn't sound like much, but the high position makes a big difference to comfort on a long trip if you're a bit lanky.

If you're not, then you probably already have enough room on low setting (the GS isn't exactly cramped to begin with) and wouldn't appreciate the extra tippy-toe-ing when you pull up.

high & low, sometimes i wish i went for the GSA, as on high its still too low for me:

It's so very confusing instead it.
My GSA seat is a bit too high for me (vertically challenged). even on the low setting. So I fitted a low seat off a GS, but that was too low and I couldn't see over the screen. And it was as hard as a plank. So I now have a standard GS seat set as; high front - low back.

The possibilities are almost infinite

Cheers people, as for leg room after years of sportsbikes even in the low position it feels very roomy.

asking if there is a standard seat position is like asking the same in a car. You put it where it fits you best. There is however a standard seat and a lowered seat option.

I'm 6ft7 and bought a 05 gs this summer. The bike came with a low seat so I replaced it with a high seat. That improved matters considerably but since the seat lies somewhat at a slope I decided to raise it at the front by 13mm following a thread in the Dutch gs forum - follow this link:

GSA was not an option for me as there are no GSAs around and I already have another heavy bike - a 2008 Varadero.

It must freak you out when you get in a car, think of all the possible combinations you could have

You'll be surprised with the improvement.

I'm 6'4". 2010GS, also have the optional high seat (= the std GSA seat?) on high, and did basically the same but with 30*30mm aluminium bar sections. so 30mm higher had it on the previous 05 GS too. It does wonders for me, changes your whole position. I get lower back pain after a while with too low positions

Tried upper position today, the car decided to burn out it's alternator, the silver lining being I had to fire up bike for work.

Bike then blew the dip beam just as I was about to go home, got a nice warning telling me why I could not see bugger all though, though had a second silver lining, the bulbs are a doddle to change in a dimly lit forecourt and a common enough size to be stocked at such a place.

Seat did not feel too different to me, only noticed it when stopping and seemed like a bit more wind noise, I suppose if I find leg cramp an issue on long runs I may put it up.

Certainly looks better down so will probably leave it there most of the time.
