Seat release

Just went to take my seat off my X Challenge and although the key moves it doesn't seem to do anything.

Anybody else had this and how did you manage to get the seat off?

Is there a way without smashing it to bits?

Well the seat catch is connected to the key release by a cable. Do you feel any resistance when you turn the key? Just checked on my XCo and turning it clockwise should release the seat. No doubt you have pushed and prodded to the seat to assist it's release...

I have just had all of that part of the bike apart to have the ally frame welded, but not sure how easy it comes apart with the seat still attached...

When you finally get the seat off you'll see why,
It's a crappy cable pull type thing with a huge gap between the outer cable
allowing loads of the inner cable to pick up road shite and turn to a rusty
mess.

If it's stuck,
all you can really do is either wiggle the key back and forth hoping it will release.
Or start undoing the plastic from inside the subframe above the wheel.


This is mine needing yet another clean up.

Thanks for the picture.....just looked at it and went out to the garage and managed to pop the seat up first go with a thin screw driver. Its handy knowing where to prod instead of prodding aimlessly!

Anyway the cable had rusted through in the middle somewhere.

Also worth stripping the catch mechanism itself. Mine filled up with mud, stopping the catch retracting fully when you turned the key, and this was enough to stop the seat from releasing.

The catch is easy to strip. unbolt it from the subframe, and then you can split the mechanism apart with a screwdriver. Just clean up and reassemble.

Yes I think I will as its quite muddy under there and not had it off since doing a week in the Pyrennes and lots of wet lanes.

the cable actually rusted and snapped exactly where a cable tie secured it and had been done too tight causing extra friction. Might be worth checking all yours.
