Seat reoair and preservation: how to?

Anybody got any tricks of the trade for preventing and repairing splits in the cover of the bike seat.

In my case it's my Dakar's (plasticky covering) seat, which has split in two places following the join in the foam underneath. I tried black duct tape but it peels off with friction quite quickly, and is pretty ugly anyway.

With an estimate of some 120 to 150 euros I have ended up buying an entire seat off flea-bay in excellent condition at 70 euros.

How preserve my "new" seat from the same fate?
How do a solid (and cheap) repair on my "old" seat?

Any ideas are welcome.

Just a thought......Is there anywhere local to you that would recover your original seat in leather...would this be harder wearing for you?

Cheapest I've found here is the 120 euros. I've looked all places to no avail for some sort of adhesive covering that can be self-applied, but no luck. as for standing up, my own pegs get tired too fast I'm afraid;
I'd thought maybe a sheepskin, but that would probably get pinched in the blink of an eye here in Marseille !!!
