Hi all

Don't mean to clog this category with my dull questions, but have just bought a Gs1150 (very pleased with it :bounce1) and have some teething problems.

This question concerns the seat, well seats, I have moved the front seat up on the higher slots (front and back slots, this right?) there's a fair ole gap between seat and tank, 2cm is that right, it does close when I sit on it.

Also the back seat just will not catch on the lock, tried taking off rubber stoppers even to reduce gap (put em back on) but still no joy.

I notice the front seat has a catch that is connected to the back one, doesn't seem to spring back and front seat doesn't 'click' down in positive manner - are the two problems part of the same issue??

Cheers :thumb2

they can be a right pain, worse wi touratwat side covers , just persevere, theres a knack to it

You normally end up wth a gap with the seat on the high setting, and there isn't much you can do about it really.

As for the back seat and the catch,it sounds like the plastic mechanism that joins the back and front together is broken. Is there a lot of movement when you put the key in to unlock the seat?

my pillion seat is a pain to lock in too, i dont worry too much about it really.

and yes there is a gap between seat and tank, wouldnt worry too much about that either..

happy riding

The front bit does move with key, but not a lot. I wouldn't worry too much about back bit not locking but it could fall off when I'm without pillion, possibly maybe? thanks all though

place your pillion seat where it looks like it should lock in, and give the top a right good hit with your fist, that should push it into position.

if that fails, dont ride with it on, looks better without anyway, then when your taking someone with you pop it on,and their weight should keep it in place.

sorted.:cool

cheers elevensies, I have whacked it with hammer fist, but although it sounds like it's locking, never does :blast

place your pillion seat where it looks like it should lock in, and give the top a right good hit with your fist, that should push it into position.

But if you're going to do this make sure you hold the key in the open position as you do it. If you're smacking it down with your fist and your fragile plastic seat locking assembly isn't already smashed, it will be soon (my guess is it's already smashed).

I hold the lock in the open position with the key (as if you're unlocking the seat) and lean down hard on the rear off the pillion seat with my left elbow. Doing this and releasing the key before 'un-leaning' locks it.

My seat locking assembly was broken when I bought my 1100. I took it to bits and araldited it back together. It works now, but only the pillion seat locks (the front seat doesn't latch no matter what I do). I can live with this for now as the pillion seat holds the front seat down and I don't ride with the pillion seat removed.

Yes, these seats can be a pain in the butt. On the back one you may want to loosen the two screws that hold the lock down a bit, pull and hold the lock up and then tighten the screws again. I have had to this when my seat would not lock down. Last time two weeks ago when the pillion seat flew off and dumping tools down a dirt road. Got lucky and happen to see it in the corner of my eye. Seat would not latch down again. resetting the lock did the trick. Still have to give the usual wack with the fist to get it to seat.

For a fix for the front not locking check this one out:

Got the the bottom ;) of the seat problem (rear one anyway, cheers for the link khpossum for front)

MattW you're also right the mechanism is already broken. I attach a photo, after taking out tool tray I could pivot the lock around the one allan bolt at the back of the lock, that's because the front half is cracked, I guess this is what MattW araldited. After pulling the lock upwards and tightening the allan bolt the back seat now 'clicks' with a positive sound and is held on tight. it may well move down again with missus on it, but I ain't gonna smack it no more.
cheers all Moz

Yep, mine was cracked in just the same place - that's what I glued together - not a difficult job once you've got it to bits. Wish they'd made them from something stronger than cr*p plastic

wasnt me that cracked it:hide

oops sorry mate, yes over the years and with the sheet plastic they use they crack, maybe should have said that first, i would guess most of our bikes are like this.

I wish I could post pics, but I fixed mine with a small piece of thin gauge aluminium sheet secured by one of the small self tappers and the hex head mounting bolt. Works too.

You need to subscribe to post pics but you can email pics to me - I'd be interested to see a stronger repair than my araldite.
