Garmin zumo 550

I have manage to: get Garmin wired into bike, done master reset, updated software, purchase life long maps, loaded maps:clap However- I have selected 'central Europe partial' as memory is not enough to take all the maps, is this sufficient for this trip, do I need city navigator and how do I put Richards route onto the Garmin or SD card. Any help would be appreciated. x

garmin

Hi Paula

get yourself an SD card and load it into your 550 then re-update your maps
just make sure your SD card is big enough.

It will tell you that if you take your SD card out your 550 will not work so get one with some spare capacity

I just fitted a 16Gb to my 660 that should be enough

then download Bascamp onto your PC off the Garmin web site.

when Richard get round to sending out the routes to everyone, you just drag and drop them into your 550 using Basecamp.

worked for me last trip

see you on the train

Andy

Hi Paula, which program have you used to update your maps on the device?

Hi Paula,

I haven't created all of our suggested routes yet. I had hoped to do them on Saturday but that cunning plan has foundered on the rocks, as Harlequins have progressed to a championship play-off game at Saracens. I will now pull my finger out and get them done by Saturday morning.

Cheers,

Richard

PS I will call you about the maps and loading the routes up.

Richard, our plans to meet you all for the Saturday evening have fallen flat (Good), we might bump into you but hopefully not (Good again)!

Enjoy your trip :D

Woffelsbach, Vianden, Bouillon and St Omer here we come.

I have reconfirmed our hotel bookings at both hotels, for:

1.Wapping
2. Paula
3. APW
4. Irosales
5. Dc2100k
6. Allthegearnoidea
7. dxtans
8. paintman

I have near enough finished the suggested routes. One day will take us out and about around the north side of Verdun, along with many of WWI the sites. I need to do a bit more on this as it is probably running backwards, if there are people who want to see the Verdun film first (to understand the battle) and then the sites. It's easy enough to reverse and in any event i will probably bring my Mac with me, so it's possible to create alternatives. For those that want to ride the roads, see the sites but in a sort of reverse order, I can leave it as it is.

On the second day, a more southerly / eastwards jaunt out via Nancy and Pont-a-Mousson. Longer in the morning than in the afternoon.

If anyone just wants to see Verdun and not bother with a bike, I think there is a bus and / or train from St Menehoulde to Verdun. Neither will be particularly regular but frequent enough to make a day of it, I guess. Failing that, it's not far via a direct route there and a direct route back from St Menehoulde to Verdun. In short, bods can do much as they like.

For our outward return kliegs, I have mirrored the alternative routes I created when we went on a recce a month or so ago. They are both decent schleppes and we have a bigger group, for sure. We will need to keep an eye on our departure times etc. etc. please.

Cheers,

Richard

PS I haven't forgotten that I need to contact a couple of you for telephone numbers and email addresses. Let me finish off the routes and I'll be with you.

Got to say I would like doing the WWI tour bus from Verdun. Need to check the pickups for that. Let me get onto 'Uncle Google'.
I am also more than likely to bring my running kit, if anybody wants to go for a run/jog in the PM after the day's out, you are welcome.

I will also bring my running kit- as I think it will look good in the pub lol remember the high vis? . Seriously, I haven't done much running recently but am willing to tag along and do my own thing if I cant keep up. P

Paula,
I ain't doing no 5K runs here, Just a 3.5..ish K to loosen up after the days riding, we will go at a easy pace, no worries.

Suggested routes all completed

I have created all of our suggested routes for the Wander.

I have circulated them by email, along with everyone's mobile numbers.

Please note:

(1) I have created two options to go to Verdun, possibly on the Saturday.

(i) An indirect way, swinging into Verdun from the north, taking in some quite small roads that criss-cross back and forth. This route goes past the main sites but 'backwards', which might make sense only to those that have not been before, finishing up at the cafes in the middle of Verdun itself. There is then a reasonably direct route back, avoiding the motorway.

(ii) A more direct way, roughly west to east. This brings you to the Verdun Ossuary at the start of the circuit, ending at the cafe between the ossuary and the bayonet trench. This might make more sense to those that haven't been before. The ossuary has quite a good cinema which shows films (in English) explaining the battle and its significance in France even today; it's worth seeing. The route then runs north and west, missing out some of the smaller criss-cross roads.

(2) For the next day, I have created a route to Pont a Mousson, via Nancy. Then back to the hotel.

(3) For the route back to the Chunnel on the last day, there are two routes.

(i) This we did last time, running right up to the coast, then a short motorway hop to the Chunnel

(ii) A slightly shorter version which picks up the motorway at St Pol. Both are reasonably long but picking up the motorway is obviously quicker

Both are routed through Peronne, from where it's possible to pick up the motorway anyway.

(4) There is always the bus and / or train option to go to Verdun.

Here is the train timetable. I can't find an on-line version for the busses, though I know there is a bus. The bus stop is just down the road from the hotel, with the timetable displayed. Failing that, the tourist office is only across the street.

See you at the train or at the Ibis, St Omer.... except Paintman, who is going on the boat. See you at the hotel.

Thanks Richard, completely forgot we were heading for St..Omer first..Doh ! Over 50's moment.
Yup, I found a few Verdun tourist bus tours, but non of them are English speaking, shame really. Might find some on the day though.
