I hadn't used the bike for a while, when I did found the alternator seized. Has a crack in the casing. I realise I'm going to need another alternator and that its not repairable.

See pic below.

I have a similar picture  I got a good second hand alternator from motorworks

I've put a wanted on the site, will see what happens, but might well end up doing the same. Have used Motorworks before and found them very good.

New ones are £430, Motorworks are around £200.

Do a bit of fishing around.......take the part number in to any decent motor factor and ask them to find a Bosch number for it (Bosch tend to be the most cross-referencerable* number) then see what they can come up with.

I'd bet that it's a bit that you can find fitted to a different bike/car and will cost a fraction of that price.

*cross-referencerable...made up word, but does the job :D

Ive was told by someone who did what fanum suggested above and bought a bocsh altenator 0124120007 part number if thats any help

There's a few on flea bay including a 1000 mile one for £125 delivered. Just a note of caution though, when mine went I found that there was two different types of multi pin connectors, so be sure to check.

Possibly because my alternator is a Denso unit. If you look at the picture you will see that the casing is cracked, which I think renders it unrepairable.

I think the two different connectors that st247 mentions are one for Denso and the other for Bosch, so if I fit a Bosch unit I will have to find a connector and possibly cut into the loom.

why not take it to my guy in kinson and see if he can do anything with it? at the very least, i'd expect to pick his brain for info re: possible options :nenau

I've had a word with the guy in Kinson. He says its fecked. Couldn't find any equivalent. Doh

Thanks for all the help and advice.

I spoke to an alternator specialist who couldn't cross reference it to anything else. Also enquired at my local BMW dealer and it appears that the connector, belt and pulleys are different from the my 40A Denso unit to the later 55A and 60A units.

I have therefore decided to order a secondhand 40A Denso alternator from Motorworks.

Thanks to Eddie for all his help. Bike now back together and working. Very reluctant to start, but did eventually fire up and now sounds good. :thumb:JB

Will now be keeping her covered on the centre stand and starting her up at least once a week. Lesson learnt. :blast

Nice sense of achievement now bike is running. Got to use my nice new 1/4 inch Halfords socket set (bargain at £14.95). :bounce1

DO NOT start it unless you intend to ride it!

All you are doing is adding condensation to the oil and emulsifying it!

Take the battery out and keep in the house after a full charge if you are not going to ride it

Seriously modern fuels are schite and not running an engine to full working temp will contaminate the oil and foul the plugs!

If you just wanna spin the oil around the engine then unplug the fuel pump wire at the tank relay (not fuel pipe) and spin her over on the starter

Also Valve heads have a bad habit of falling off hot 1200 engines!
