I have taken a deposit on my bike from what appears to be a Belgian dealer.
We have arranged for collection and full payment on Thursday.
Has anyone had any experience of European buyers?Ideally what to be wary of and what’s the position with DVLA and exporting ? I have had a look on the V5 and it looks as if the new keeper section is just given to the dealer and I send the export section to DVLA.Anyone done it before or have any knowledge of selling or scams ?

First sold to european buyers back in the early nineties ... much easier and simpler than selling to a UK buyer. In fact the last three bikes i've sold have been to european buyers.

The V5 tells you all you need to know. How they pay is up to you, same as dealing with any UK buyer.

Sounds super dodgy but could be legit... make sure that the money is 100% on your account and not pending validation or anything like that before you part ways with your bike.

I've had a scammer reaching out to me a few years back with a similar proposition saying that they were going to send the money and then a van would pick it up, did a little bit of research and it was 100% SCAM

Did the same - slight issue was buyer wanted to pay in NI pounds on arrival. Accompanied to bank to verify and deposit funds. All good

probably be the Belgian who buys a few bikes at a time, quite often bikes from here, comes in his van, pays up and loads the bike, job done.

What utter bolloxs, he's taken a deposit... Can i ask ? Have you actually sold a vehicle to someone in the EU ?

I have and it was simple - I just informed DVLA in writing the the bike had been sold and was being exported to Poland. They wrote back a few days later confirming I was not the owner - or words to that effect.

BTW, from memory you give them the whole V5.

I have the deposit via PayPal and transferred it straight into my bank no problem !
Seems to have a genuine website with various bikes for sale at the moment.

I sold a xchallenge to a polish lad a few years back. He bought without seeing, so an element of risk for him also.

We had several email exchanges, then phone calls, then he paid in full and arranged to have it collected, keeping me updated re who it was going to be collecting it etc.

Sent the bit of the v5 to dvla, the rest he needed to get it registered in poland.

A hassle free sale for me.

Great thanks for the replies and reassurance !
All going well it will be off to Belgium tomorrow !

I did the same when I sold my KTM 525RFS to a Polish guy who bought three KTMs in Scotland and took them back in his van.

Have a friend who works at a bike dealership in Sussex. They sometimes get euro buyers buying 4 or 5 used bikes from them in one swoop, no haggling, pay, load up and go. Think it’s happening a fair bit.

I once sold a bike via ebay to a guy in Malta. I thought it was a scam but the guy phoned me from a very strange number and he turned out to be genuine. Paid the money into my bank and picked the bike up two weeks later, no probs.

Sold my 1200RT to a Belgian Dealer who turned out to be a German national:D
We went to my bank and he deposited the cash into my account, never touched the cash.
On the V5 I entered his details (posted to the DVLA), gave him the keys to the bike, he signed my receipt that he purchased my bike for £xxxx and off he went.
Quiet strait forward. :thumb2

There is a scam with Paypal. My understanding is the buyer pays the full amount with Paypal but sends a second party to collect. The buyer then claims to Paypal he never received the goods and the cash is clawed back. This is a popular scam and often the buyer makes an excuse why he can't collect the bike but a friend will.

The most sure way is cleared funds in your Bank A/C and a sold as seen receipt signed by the buyer and yourself.

Thus do not release the bike until you have cleared funds in your Bank and tranferred from the buyer, not PayPal

Lad came from Europe to buy a 2008 KTM 450 my lad had , he paid over the odds and cash , no issues at all . His van was full of bikes and he had a trailer full as well.

I sold my 1200gs lc to a belgian dealer 2 months ago. This guy buys 4 at a time and paid in used £20's. He let me scan his passport. Just sent the export part of V5 to dvla and gave him the rest. All went through ok. Probably the same guy, he is also German but lives in Belgium, 68 with white hair and beard. Nice guy but hard to deal with.

It sounds as though bikes in the U.K. are cheaper than in mainland Europe, and with the pound falling, it will mean even more continentals coming over to grab a bargain. Cars will probably be cheaper here as well, but not the same interest, as the left/right hand drive issues.

There’s an opportunity to sell it in Euros on the continent, and change the Euros into pounds, you will almost certainly make more money, more work involved though.

Sold My RT last year sounds like same guy, paid the asking price, walked him to my bank and he paid in cash, he picked up my advert from auto trader, he knows his business and straight forward to deal with.

Sounds like the same guy saw my ad on autotrader too. No hassle over the phone offered the full asking price!
