Well the good news is that the software related workaround described (in the link below) by this fine Aussie gentleman worked for me and my 2 SMH 10s are back working including proper sound levels. Hurrah!

Do you not back up your firmware when you install a newer version?
I have a folder full of old software revisions. Just incase i get a borked or buggy version
I never did (install a newer version), Martin; nor would I have been able to do, at least in more recent times, given the issues described in the attached video.
I know when i got my first SMh unit, the sound quality was awful,
One SW update later and it was brilliant
Yours was a very curious case to say the least
But not unique, you will find, if you watch the linked video (his problem was identical to mine) and read the accompanying comments by others
