Well the good news is that the software related workaround described (in the link below) by this fine Aussie gentleman worked for me and my 2 SMH 10s are back working including proper sound levels. Hurrah!

I have a folder full of old software revisions. Just incase i get a borked or buggy version

Yours was a very curious case to say the least
