Sena SMH10 Motorcycle Bluetooth Intercom

Anyone got one/used one or know where to get one.
The review on webbikeworld gives it the thumbs up!

I've got a pair in bound from Korea.
Will let you know how I get on with them.

Thanks Baggie for the info. Let us know what you think and if what they say in the review on webbikeworld is accurate!

I went for a Midland BT2 in the end and I have to say its very good so far. I think the Sena will be better thought with regards to control with the jog wheel etc.

Sena SMH10 and Interphone F4

Both the Sena SMH10 and Interphone F4 are very easy to use. The Sena is a long range unit (900+meters) and the F4 is small and forms to helmet like a leech. The Sena is a bit easier to remember how to use after you set it in the closet awhile. Not many places sell the radios...best is RadioRider.com, they ship worldwide too.

Baggie - any news on your delivery from Korea? I contacted RadioRider.com and they said they would ship to the UK, but I will be stung for customs, vat, etc. Thinking of trying the French suppliers. Do let us know if yours is in, and your impressions! Thanks. Guy

They arrived last week. I ordered via their European office in Paris. So whilst I paid in Euros, they came from Korea so I had to pay VAT (~£41) and the UPS handling fee (~£11). Ended up just under £300 for a pair .. for a cost of Euro263 inc P+P

Initial impressions are very good.

Helmets
A bit of fiddling to fit them to my Arai and I haven't tried to install in my Schuberth S1 as I think I will have to make a hole in the wind collar on that helmet to fit the microphone boom through. With the Arai I had to insert some rubber padding between the inside of the helmet and mounting clamp to enable the unit to lie flat against the outside of the helmet. I could have just stuck it on with the alternate stick on mount supplied but wanted to make sure I had in the correct place before committing myself!

Pairing
So far have paired with an iphone, Blackberry Bold, iPod touch and a Nokia N900 and was simple in all cases. I could control the media player on the Blackberry but not on the N900, didnt try with the other two. To test the range I put the iPod playing music (repeated also with the BB) in one corner of the ground floor of my house, walked out into the next room and then out of the exterior door almost diagonally opposite the player. This would be a radial distance of about 10m with a double skinned brick wall at about 5m and sound was loud and clear, although it faltered after another few metres. I repeated this with the other unit held to my ear and spoke to a willing volunteer and achieved similar results (we counted "1" then "2" etc in sequence so when it stops you know the last number each of you heard and how far you had got)

Controls
All easy to use with my waterproof gloves on. Having a big knob for the volume is obviously a good idea! The media player on the BB responded to click the knob=play/pause. Press and twist knob=skip track forwards/backwards. There is a separate button for the phone control.

Phone Calls
I have made and received calls on the bike for testing. It was OK - the other end could tell I was on a bike, but then I find the Arai very noisy and windy. For reference my (quiet) Schuberth with an autocom - I had a call that ended with "can't talk further as I am on the bike" and the other end thought I was joking as they had not realised at all. There was plenty of volume on the move, if a bit lacking in bass in the music. With the Blackberry I could use voice dialling but it couldnt understand the voice dialling a contact name at any speed. I'm not really interested in phones on bikes so didn't really bother further with that.

I need to fit up my pillions helmet before I can try that but do not doubt it will work.
I would like to try a bluetooth sat nav as well as music going to see how that works.
I will also try a range test in the field between the headsets as I am interested in using them for bike to bike.
I only hope they are waterproof!

Thats a quick run through my quick tests!

Hope that helps

Thanks for taking the time and effort in writing such a comprehensive review. Very interesting. I'd also be interested to hear how you get on with a bluetooth satnav (?Zumo). I've found someone on eBay who sells a pair for the same money as you, so maybe he's doing the import thing from Korea too. Happily you have not paid any more than his listing.

Coming from a wired comms set up like you, your comparison is very helpful. I've had too many problems with Bike2Bike radios, antennae, low and tinny volume, and dodgy connections, hence considering this. Is the unit loud enough to wear with earplugs? I too wear a noisy Arai. Any noticeable difference in helmet noise/buffeting with the unit attached?

I notice you can also power the unit from a cig adapter whilst on the bike, which is good news for touring.

Let us know your further findings, and thanks again for your writing effort and for being an early adopter! I don't mean to use you as a beta tester before I commit! All the best.....

A quick update...
I have been using it with my Arai Astro J as I still haven't braved cutting up the "wind collar" on my Schuberth S1. It is the noisiest helmet I own.

I cannot detect any rise in wind noise from fitting the Sena BT unit.

The Sena has paired with a Zumo 660 & a Nokia N900 without any problems. The play/pause & track fwd/rev works with the N900 media player.
I'm very pleased with it :thumb2

Excellent to hear about it, thanks for the update Baggie.

I tried the Midland BT2 the other day and it was impossible to hear it with earplugs in - and that was before I'd even got moving on the bike. Midland said it's not designed for those who wear earplugs! Um, that excludes many of your potential clients.

Anyway, back to your Sena. Glad it's working well. Loud enough for earplugs with my/your Arai Astro?

I use the custom moulded earphones from ultimateear.com which are not as quiet as decent foam items. I will try it with the foam ones next time I go out. I normally only use foam jobs when I'm on a long trip e.g. across France to the Alps.

I had the Sena near full volume at "about" 70mph :) wearing a really noisy helmet with the ultimateears on my run yesterday. Believe me and the reviews on webbikeworld - the Sena goes way loud, louder than autocom I think.

Sena SMH10 Bluetooth Headset Dual (rider to pillion)

hello, i have the sena headset, i got it from here

http://www.ultimatebikegear.co.uk/categories/Intercoms/Sena-SMH10/

So far i have paired the headset up to my 660, and then paired my blackberry phone to the 660 and control the phone via the sat nave.

Making and receiving calls is easy, very good quality sound, also depends on phone signal but so far no problems.

Garmin works well on navigation, clear sound and again no problems so far.

I fitted my set to my Schuberth S1 Helmet, i had to use the stick on option, i had to make a small cut in the wind collar, also fitted the other set to mrs d's shoe raid and that was easy, just pulled out the pads and run the wires underneath.

Mrs hasn't been out on the bike yet but i made her wear it around the house to test it  again loud and clear.

I find the jog dial very easy to use and the on/off function is easy to use as well, always pairs up when switched on, so far i would definitely recommend this product.

Does it have the boom mic? Any issues with space for the mic? My Arai Viper GT is pretty tight on space in front of my mouth, so I'm concerned about fitting the mic in. The Interphone F4 has a slimline mic, so I'm torn between the two units. Webbikeworld find both of these units better than the Scala G4.

yes there is a boom mike, it is very small and shaped to fit within the chin bar.
it looks round in the pictures but in fact it is quite flat.
