Service advice

Hi all

My bike is a 2016 R1200 GSA with 18500 miles having only been serviced by me in Oct last year @17100.

shameful low miles I know... but debating whether to self service again, or whether to use main dealer and have final drive check / Mod at the same time.

Main reason for dealer also, it that I would like brake fluid change as well this time, which I’m not fully confident doing.

Any ideas of anticipated costs using either Bowkers at Preston or Williams Manchester?

Any info appreciated... bike is out of warranty so just looking for peace of mind this time and perhaps self service again next year.

Forgot to add... I do also have the Motoscan app and obd reader which I used last year for service reset etc.

I not sure if motoscan can perform abs brake flush function, but if it can, I’d be happy using that.

Hi, I service my own R1200GS LC as its also out of warranty. No issues at all. I also change break fluid etc. with the use of a 911 but only do this if competent & confident of carrying this out. Regarding the drive shaft mod, this can be done without having to have a service etc. as its an advisory recall & paid for by BMW. One last thing, if you self service your bike keep all the receipts.

Thanks Gary... yes I’m no mechanic but have always serviced my own bikes following the good advice on here and guides online.

Usually get all my service parts from motorworks and always keep receipts so no issues there.

I only mentioned dealer as I thought they could do the drive check whilst they had the bike, but tbh I checked the shaft and regressed last year, it showed no issues of water ingress, but good to get it checked whilst the offer is there and may help when the time comes to sell, which I hope won’t be for a long time.

Same here, I service my own 2016 bike and use Motoscan

I did however get my brake fluid changed by the dealer (for info, there’s no need to prime the pump on the LCs)

I’ll get the shaft checked next time I get the brake fluid done, next year I guess, I’m in no rush as I dropped my FD last year out of curiosity and it looked like new

Cheers shifty... that’s actually a very good price, considering it will cost me approx £120 + vat for parts etc if I do myself.

Think i’ll Call in and ask the question this week.

I’ve just had a 12000 mile service completed at Bowkers Preston.
Engine oil and filter, valve check, air filter and spark plug replacement, cardan drive oil change and shaft housing drain modification and shaft balance check. Overnight loan of a new 1250 GS (150 miles on the clock). £290.
Seems reasonable to me.
I too service my own bikes but only after the end of the warranty period.
When I got my bike home, I had a look at the modification. As described in an earlier thread, the little rubber tube was quite loose and could easily be pushed into the shaft tunnel. I pulled it out of the freshly drilled bare hole, degreased said hole and painted the hole walls in an attempt to prevent corrosion in the future. Next day, I reinstalled the rubber tube and glued it in place with rubber solution.

I use Bowker, my experience mirrors Alan R's. Approx £160 for 6000 miles, approx £300 ish for 12k (adds valves, brake fluid etc). Always get courtesy bike. Good value IMO

R1250GS (21) Allan Jefferies service just cost me £168 for engine oil/filter, rear drive oil change, TFT software update and the shaft service action. I have a WiFi GS911 that I used on my previous 2011 twin cam but choose to have this bike dealer serviced whilst it’s in warranty and why not at that price.
The only thing I’m not entirely happy about doing is the valve check on an LC, on my twin cam changing the shims was simple, not that it ever needed any. Checking clearances is straight forward enough but I don’t have the cam alignment tools/jigs and removing the cams to replace the shims has increased the complexity from the twin cam.
My plan for my 1250 is self servicing after warranty but cam alignment/clearances by a local independent ex BMW Motorrad mechanic who has the equipment.

Final drive checks, annual service including brake fluid change etc

Yes, Steve Trehern of Rainbow Workshop, though at the moment I’m only assuming he has the cam alignment tools, definitely has the experience and training. Very well thought of and comes highly recommended by those that use him.
He’s at Broughton just outside of Brigg, a friend has his twin cam booked in there next month.
Did wonder if he’s a frequenter of this parish.

Well I’m a happy bunny... got the service completed inc brake flush and also had the ahem ‘shaft enhancement’ checked and mod completed.

Had a loan bike offered to me and a couple of hours later it was all complete.

Overall service from Bowker was excellent and will certainly be using them again in the future.
