Hi sorry to sound like a newbie but what is the service interval around 9K miles . My bike is an 08 F650gs. Serviced in Dec 09 at 4000 miles. In Dec 10 @ 8000 miles the service light came on.

I changed the oil & filter at 6K so is this a time based service or is it due ?

I have the statutory recall for disk brake nuts ?

How long can I defer this service until it needs doing ? 12K ?

I am planning a long hols in May so would prefer a service b4 I go

thanks in advance

I thought they were every 6000m/year. However, I've just looked in the service section of the handbook, and all it says is anually. Higher mileages will need more frequent servicing, which is all a bit vague.

The big question, is your bike still covered by warranty? If so, it needs servicing now. If not, it can easily wait til 12000. It might affect the resale value though when you come to sell it. BMW buyers like full dealer service history.

I think the reason the service light has come on is time based,
after each service the time for next service is reset to a year
ahead or next 6000 miles which ever comes first. I guess in
your bikes case, dealer serviced Dec '09 now Dec '10 the computer
has decided it is time to visit a dealer, for new fluids etc & general
money redistribution....

I think the onboard computer briefly shows the next scheduled
service date on start up.

cheers

Thanks Guys , sounds like 6K is the common factor. In answer to ILMV's and V 8 s questions. I bought the bike in may 10 with 4K on clock , previous owner had bought a 1150gs and had hardly used the bike so I have put the 5 K on this year

Its now out of warranty.
I think Im going to to err on letting go upto 10K at minimum.

Thanks again

Talk your dealer before booking the service. You only need an oil, filter, inspect similar to the initial 600 mile service, it should not be expensive.
The brake fluids should have been changed after one year, then every second year. The valves are checked at 12000, the plugs are changed at 24000 the air filter at 12000, so nothing else unless the recalls need doing at the same time.
£60 to £110 seems reasonable any more and look to change dealers.

Just seen your last post about been our of warranty now, still worth doing the oil change, the service reminder light will piss you off and without a special electronic tool there is no way to reset it. Dealers are desperate for a bit of paying work at the moment.
With your annual mileage forget about a valve check until 18000, most dealers say they never adjust them till 24000 anyway.
