I got a haynes manual and it indicates that after the 12000 mile service/ oil change. Oil should then be changed every 12000 thereafter. I was under the impression from bmw that it should be every 6000.

Stick with the manufacturers service intervals which are 6k

Definitely 6000 unless your at the drive-train section?
