Hi I,m new here and got my 08 gs1200 on Wednesday. The last service was in 2010 with 12977 miles so next one due at 18977 but my bike has covered only 350 since last service and the light is on is it worth a service or not. Cheers.

I would do a full service including brake fluid and then you have a set baseline to work from at the set intervals going forward. Do it yourself as its pretty easy if you're mechanically minded.

Thanks for that. I thought of changing just the oil, brake fluid is nice and clean.

If the brake fluid is 4 years old it certainly needs changing
The colour of brake fluid starts off yellow when new and gradually changes to a darker almost orange colour when old so it could be clean and clear and still fcuked

As Bilco said. Just an oil service and change the brake fluid annually, best is just after winter even if it is clear, so is the water in the brake fluid. The clutch fluid every 2 years. The BMW manual says every 2 years for brake fluid but I insist on it being changed every year. Don't F**k with your brakes, keep it in good condition.

Fluids certainly - tyres too.

I'd have the plugs and air filter out for a look at too. Your biggest issue will be 4 year old fuel if there is any!!

Scrap the fuel it will cause much trouble even with octane booster

Definitely make sure all brake pistons are all moving correctly and definitely change the brake fluid. After so much time moisture will have repels past the seals at top and bottom ends.

Alternator belt might have set around the pulleys. If so it won't last long when you get the bike going. Whip off the belt cover to check but may as well change the belt. You'll also get chance to make sure alternator hasn't seized.

When it's back on the road give it some hard use.

My brothers bike is same reg. bought with similar miles last year. His was fully serviced and had been used regularly. But very few miles and ridden very gently. He's put another 20K of "proper" use on it but engine still feels tight.
Mine is also an 08 with 50K on the clock zings along in comparison.

The bike has full service history and I bought it from a good bike shop with new MOT. I have done just over 300 miles on it and feels good but gear box sounds like a tractor 'CLUNK UP AND DOWN' or is that just me.

You are not alone. When I rode my first GS home I couldn't find first at a standstill, and it clunked badly. I phoned a mate telling him I'd bought a lemon. After pissing himself laughing he told me the trick of how to get it to mesh into 1st gear when stopped and I got used to the 'character' of the bike.

:agree think I'd miss the tractor feel of the gearbox if I moved away from a GS, something reassuring about hearing the gears clunking in now.
