Morning all, long time member but infrequent poster - my 800GS is getting close to 12k, and is ready for a service, just wondered if there was anything in particular that I should expect - its still in warranty, so does it have to be a BMW dealer that does it, or could any reputable service centre do it and stamp my book. My warranty docs say it needs to be an authorised BMW service centre using genuine parts, but does that necessarily mean I have to traipse to Chester Motorrad?

Not long back from a week in the Highlands, in awful weather, and the bike was awesome, I rode the Applecross Pass in a hailstorm the other Saturday!

Cheers for any help guys

For warranty it needs to be serviced by bmw-dealer (motorrad).

I'm sure it will fly through the 12k service, are your front-wheel bearings okay..is the head-stock bearing okay. Other than that,.. :beerjug:

Some dealers dont insist the valves are checked at 12000, Mine said they have never adjusted the valves on any of the hundreds of F800 series bikes they have worked on before 18000. Ask your dealers opinion, it will save you about £100 on the service.

If its the extended warranty you've got, then it has to be at a BMW dealer.
Its in the small print - no alternatives I'm afraid.

Service Query

Quote from page 1 of BMW New Bike Warranty Booklet provided with my new F800 GS -

"We believe that Authorised BMW Dealers are best equipped to meet your service and maintenance requirements. However, your dealer warranty will not be affected should you decide to have servicing carried out by a non-BMW authorised workshop".

It does earlier state that proof of servicing in accordance with recommended schedules and timescales will be required in the event of a warranty claim so as long as you have the service log book stamped by whoever does your service then there should be no problems with any warranty claims.

Motor Manufacturers who insisted that a vehicle could only be serviced by an authorised/official dealer were found to be guilty of restrictive practice and were forced by law to stop.

I am about to take my 1yr old F800 to an independent ex BMW technician for it's 12k service.

Do it yourself

Spot on Silver, EU law states that you do not have to have the bike serviced by BMW for them to honour the warranty as long as you have used quality parts and the warranty clain isnt resultant of the works carried out.

I service mine all the time, but I used to work in a dealership so I know how your bike is treated and beleive me if you knew a lot more of you would insist on using smaller workshops.

I have bought a GS911 tool so I dont need to go to the dealership even if there is a computer melt down and I can turn off the service interval reminder.

Anyway stop writing on here and get out riding.

Regards

Mark

yep,its called block exemption....as long as you use equivalent quality parts you should be okay...mercedes got into trouble putting ads out saying their service parts were better than what your local garage could supply...mercedes or bmw for that matter dont make filters, spark plugs, brake pads etc..so the oe manufacturers ie..ngk,bosch,mann,fram,ferodo,brembo etc took them to task...
