 Applied brakes to pull into garage for fuel this afternoon and almost sailed straight past. Noticed brake fail light came on also. Finished journey on residual brakes. Found that stop and tail light not working either. All fuses and tail bulb seem ok. Any ideas please? :(

Do a SEARCH and the conundrum of Servo Brakes will be revealed, make a coffee and read through hours of all types of experiences........
Oh and if you want more..........check out Adv Rider

Essbee, Its a feature of BMW servo brakes, the solution is non servo brakes.
These can be found on all other bikes and even on some BMW's, if you specify the non ABS brakes you get ordinary ones that work.

You may have started the bike with the brake on? It's comical really but if you apply the brake while starting the bike the clever BWM system detects a fault! To remedy this 'fault' it resets to 'residual' braking ie next to no braking!

The only way around it is to keep an eye on the warning panel as you start the bike, and try not to do too many hill starts :D

This is my experience of the 1200, it may be different on the 1150 :thumb

Starting the bike with the brake on shouldn't matter. It's turning on the ignition with the brakes on that matters. However in this case you should have a warning light from the moment you turn the key - that is to say the warning light that flashes when you turn the key will not stop flashing unless the brakes initialise properly.

Hi, Check the rear brake light switch is OK. The brake light switch activates the servo pump and if either are n/w that will be the problem.

Working Again

Just got it working. Dropped it off at dealership and it was fixed within a couple of hours. Couldn't find any faults although computer flagged up 5 error codes none to be found. Reckons probably plug-in connector under tank into power unit was loose. All seems ok now, hope it stays like it.

Very likely, you have faulty brake switch. Either hand brake or foot brake. If the 0.001€ worth micro switch is stuck, servo wont start (the red light) and brake light stays off.
If the switch is "just about to die" it can recover for a while. Mine recovered for few weeks before final death.

I would replace both switches right away.

It kills servo & ABS, both front and rear. You would be on "residuals".

At least on mine it killed brake light. I do not recall if it killed other lights.

Drat

It's broke again. Have done about 50 miles since it was supposedly corrected last time. Exactly the same fault - now have boffin on way from BMW to check it out. Will keep you all informed :(
