Hi All, Well today the bike decided to let me down for the first time. Mind you I have had it since January. Got it out of the garage set off and the brake failure warning light stayed on. At the bottom of the road not very much in the way of brakes (shit me thinks). So off I went straight to The dealers, Alan Jefferies. Thet were very busy and could not look at it until monday. Straight away they gave me a bike to use, new 1200RT. I think this was very good service seeing as how it is Friday and they will not have a demonstrator for the weekend now. Just hope it is fixed very quickly as well, as I am going to the south of France in less than a fortnight. So far I cannot fault the service. Will keep you posted on the outcome.

Might be something simple like dirt lodged in the handlebar or foot micro-switches for the brake lights.

I do find it a bit odd that the GS seems to have almost no brakes when the servos fail - my old R1100S did admittedly need more of a handfull on the lever, but you could still brake without the servos the day I clipped the foot switch with a traffic cone.

Mine has done the same... 06 model linked servo, the first time the rear pads were low, this time I think it's the rear disk needs replacing. Got the disk and will do it this weekend. Hopefully

I keep reading this about failing servos.....my '03 1150 has nearly done 50k and everything works fine, so far, but I'm worried that if the servo goes when I'm riding, I won't be able to stop at all! When I push it around with the engine off, the brakes will hardly stop it! I assume that when you do a servo-ectomy, getting rid of the extra components allows the brakes to function as normal?

It does, normal brakes like an R1 (ok,not quite )

If the servo fails, what you're left with is socalled residual braking, which still complies with German law, but that was established some decades ago.
So it requires your current day bike should at least brake like a bike from yesterday with brake drums.

So there is some brakeforce left, but if you're counting on normal servo brake force, then it's a surprise.
And depending on the situation, potentially a nasty one. DAMHIK.

Hi,
My 06 GSA 1200's servo decided to run intermittently without any lever/peddle input. I made the usual checks with the micro switches and changed the battery.
The servo then started to run continuously so when I swathed off the ignition and back on the self test could not work so now have residual braking.
One thing I have noticed is when I switch the ignition on, the low beam headlight flashes! Is this some indication or a symptom of something expensive?

Hi, my current R12GS does not have the servo, and the headlight flashes too when I switch ignition on. I think that this way the headlamp is checked for right functioning, during pre ride check. Then it's switched off, to save battery.

I had intermittentl;y failign servos on mine.

It's hard to know which was worse: expecting the servos to work and be faced with "residual braking" (i.e. huge effort for medicore retardation); or expecting the servos not to work and find you're doing emergency stops with ABD fizzing and tyres chirping away.

Wasn't it Dennis (aka GrumpyGit) who said he would have stopped faster if he'd just put his feet down? As soon as I hear "residual braking" my mind automatically thinks "no brakes".

I'm going to see a couple of people but I'm inclined to pay someone to rip the unreliable, not fit for purpose expensive rubbish out and have normal brakes.

I don't ride every day or week now but use mine now for the big annual euro-tour, it's payed for and I've got the luggage. I thought I could just leave it in the garage rigged up to the optimate, give it a service every year and being a Beemer it would be ready to go anywhere. It's a bit pants isn't it?

I'm finding it hard to recommend these bikes to anyone these days

rode from the med up to st malo on the channel then all the way up to durham on residual braking.
Once i got used to the force needed (ie felt like i was going to touch the bar with the lever) it was do-able.
It also made me look (quite rightly so) further up the road!
Never rode 800 miles without really braking before .....

My brake failure light was flashing extra fast and would not go out as normal. So in the past it seemed to be the pads so i changed them and the disk as it was getting thin. After lots of tests and messing we tried to charge the battery and that solved it. The battery was strong enough to start the bike but for some reason wasn't able to test the brake servo's ???? very strange... but a few hours on the optimate and thats fixed...

AJ's were also very good when my K1200S servo failed on a Saturday afternoon - they took it straight into the workshop, assessed the problem, loaned me an R1200S (great fun ) and had it fixed under warranty by the following Tuesday
