Settle

They do a lot of filming for the Ch 5 series of All Creatures Great and Small there too Stu. Beautiful place and the route you took is a great ride (spectacular doing it the other way...dropping down into Littondale)

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind the next time I'm up there. :thumb2

Like Dave said, from our side it’s a great run through the Forest of Bowland, round Stocks Reservoir to Settle, over the tops to Littondale on your road, then on to Kettlewell. From there, Cam Gill Road is a favourite, otherwise I head up to Buckden and turn left and go back West through Yockenthwaite.

I took my Wife that way in the car once, and pulled over at Yockenthwaite. My Wife askied ‘why,’ in that way that women do, so I pointed and she recognised ‘Helen’s Farm’ from ACG&S… Suddenly I’m getting brownie points 🤣

Good god man, you’re going to have every southern Tom, Dick and Harry coming up riding our roads at this rate. Please refrain from posting such things.
It is a nice steady little ride though. Is the beer still served straight from the barrel via a large jug?
I’ve worked as a medic on the Littondale show/fete in Arncliffe a few times. A very rural country type event.

The chippy opposite the car park / filling station is grand.
From where I am, just outside Lancaster, I can get to Settle and back without touching the A65, other than to cross it, on some very nice roads.

you just need to watch out for the average speed camera's that the speeding zealots at lancashire council have plastered all over the countryside. bloody eyesores!

I don't usually venture as far as the Littondale, Kettlewell and Arncliffe area on a day out, but glad I did yesterday. The weather was perfect and very little traffic.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the Timothy Taylor's pumps on the bar and it t took great restraint not to have one. I can't say whether it's served by jug but I did clock beer barrels connected up behind the bar all wrapped in insulated covers. I never saw a pint pulled because there was only me drinking Coke and a couple on the benches outside drinking wine.
To say it was rustic inside is an understatement.

I walked to the falcon inn over the fells from Kettlewell once, a long time ago when I was quite young - mid 20s probably. The beer was served from jugs filled in the cellar. Food consisted of ham or cheese sandwiches. I had lots of both. The walk back, mainly climbing up that bloody steep hill, was horrendous. I nearly threw up.

You could also buy fishing permits for the river Skirfare, but only worth it a bit further down the valley where there is some water. I caught a 2lb brownie there.

I saw something on the wall about fishing. If I remember correctly they have a fishing lake/pond/river for the use of the customers.

A view of the fells from the Falcon Inn doorway. The photo is pretty much in line with Kettlewell as you look over the cottages, so a nice walk but probably not when you've had a skin full.:beer:And yes it does look steep and craggy.

IIRC it’s steep to start with - the bit in your photo, then it seemed to go forever uphill but just slightly less steep. In fact I’ve I’ve got a map app…..

Looks like about 260metres of ascent if we took the footpath but I’m pretty sure we went on the bridleway as that route was dry so another 30 metres for fun.

There’s a bit of a scramble from the Kettlewell side, with a lovely view back over the village. I did the trek to the Falcon with my daughter some years ago, but we took the longer/easier route back around the end of the fell because she fell asleep in the pub 🤣

Brilliant pics, the Goldie looks very much at home in that environment, doesn’t it?
I tried to change the photo of the bike Infront of the pub to black and white, but couldn't do it because my phone wasn't behaving itself.

Here's one I took at Dent last year for the look I was trying to achieve.

We've had a family holiday every year in Arncliffe for the last 20 years. My brother in law rents the large double fronted house behind the red car each year for his birthday bash. We fill the house (sleeps 14) and get rooms in the falcon, and some kip in camper vans at the camp site down the road. I've had some fabulous drinking sessions in the falcon.
One year we were there when we met researchers for the series 'All creatures great and small' they asked if we were local and if we'd like to be extras. Unfortunately not, most of the houses there are holiday homes, they'd have to go a long way to find some 'locals'.

You've managed to capture the dark mood that pervades over Dent when a certain person roams the streets calling "Micky, Mickeeeey":D
