I got the full BMW topbox and vario system cases with my 1200 and I think they look much better then the Givis (sorry - Givis are just too rounded).

But the BM items aren't exactly spacious. I wouldn't fancy touring 2-up for long relying on that space - so just as well that the wife has gone off the idea of riding pillion after a couple or three long hauls to the south of France and back through appalling weather some years back.

Anyway, just off this weekend with three mates to the California Superbike school (Rockingham) to hone my cornering skills - I think I'll remove the luggage for the day on this occasion to avoid scuffing it.

I'll help take the pressure off ya toad:)

I had system paniers on my 1150 ferkin things thet are to load off the bike keep tipping over with the lid open. As for the exhaust side what a laugh that was hence the givi's.

Practabilitty aint always pretty but they sure as hell worked .
Sold the bike got a new 1200 with the bloody vario things same old problem .

Any chance of measuring yours with the givi's on just to compare width .

Don't look to bad mate love ya spirit :thumb

Biggun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I had a similar set up on my 2002 Triumph Tiger and thought they looked awful, so much so that I never used the panniers because they looked and felt as though they had been thrown on as an afterthought.

Haven't read all the replies, so sorry if this has been replied to earlier, but what is wrong with the BMW Vario panniers?

All the best,
Keith.

BMW's Effort

Set the Vario's to 'Lard' and this is what you get :augie

Givis have got to represent VFM at the side of OE and do the job so who cares TBH? Is it vanity or have people been shouting insults as you ride by?

bricks, blocks and bollo.....

panniers will never be "a joy to behold"
they're all fugly! :D
but if you look at the lego bricks (Vario)
and compare to the Tupperware (Givi)....
imho, from many years of experience....
give me Givi anyday -i know they will do the job :thumb2

just wish i could swop the "Classic period piece" breeze block Krausers:rolleyes: on my Airhead for Givis :blast

They look fine to me, I was thinking of going down the same road as I already have a GiVi topbox, and being as my GS is same colour I will certainly go for Givi.
I think the ally boxes are overrated to heavy, to wide, and farrrrrrr to expensive, and who are some of these guys kidding, the closest there going to get to 'The long way round' is when they find the roads closed!
If you want sleak fitted luggage you want an RT!

If you are going to buy a bike that the manufacturer makes bloody good kit for why go and buy something else?................those cases belong on something like a Honda as aftermarket gear.

If you got a GS and want luggage get the proper stuff!

OK, so you want to save a few bucks..............so then get yourself a Varadero, or Tiger or something?

we are all individuals, taste is subjective. For my pennith worth they look like a lard ass as Ashley would say. Sure they are fuctional and well built but the round lines don't show off the anular lines of the bike. But hey who gives a monkies... you have to ride it and you spent the money. So enjoy them and on this forum don't ask silly questions about asthetics, unless you have a picture of some cute thin thing.

luggage

they look good better than those over priced corned beef cans most tossers seem to prefer:augie i use hepco & becker juniors myself :thumb2, and if you like em use em

Got a bit side tracked by my packing abilities there for a mo :augie
Don’t know about you, but I cant see the rear of my bike whilst riding it, so who cares what others think of what it looks like :rob

Same could be said for the PT Cruiser, if you've still got it.

I did just that. I had the Vario panniers on mine from new. Compared to the GIVI stuff I now use they are second rate. Capacity wise, ease of getting on and off wise too. They look great compared to GIVI but in the cold light of day when it's practical useage required they aint a patch on the GIVI's.

As for looks, who cares, the GS is an ugly firker anyway so anything you strap on it, aside from a page 3 babe will nto increase it's appeal to the eye.

8 days for two people in vario panniers? You must have both stunk something rotten.

I've just fitted a set of Givi E41N and I'm really not sure about the look. I only really ride on the road, so not too fussed that they're not ally and "hard" looking, but I think it makes the bike look over large from the rear.

Interestingly if you look from the front, the panniers are no wider than the handlebars, so it doesn't increase the overall width.

Just not 100% on it overall.

So, what do you think?

IMHO - sexy is just plain wrong. But it is very functional. Can it do both? Maybe - but I am not sold on aluminium pans/box either. Every tool has a job. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.:beerjug:

Talking of asses -
an·nu·lar [an-yuh-ler]–adjective 1. having the form of a ring.

Sorry Dean, not one to normally point out spellings, i always have typos too but this one made me smile,:) (guessing you did mean Angular)

big ass!

i know this thread is getting on a bit now but....

just been reading through, just bought an 04 gs with new vario luggage:D, having traded in a Yam Fazer thou with yamaha luggage i cannot get over how much space i now have, her indoors is doubling her holiday wardrobe:eek:

the yam luggage looks quite big but its like a reverse tardis effect, big on the outside and tiny on the inside, you can't get much in it. Also if you have the panniers you cannot fit a top box as the rear subframe wont take it.

Anyway i am more tham happy with the capacity, will have to see how they perform this year.
