sorry - but they're piggin' ugly

i hate panniers and top boxes - full stop.

my idea of luggage should be tucked in and as inconspicuous as possible.
those look like last minute add-ons that aren't integrated, don't fit, don't look right and well - turn the bike into something it was never designed to be.

but its up to you :mmmm

what was that motomartin does this look familiar :D :D

The same could be asked about this, and I would give the same answer, big fat ass.

More pix please, I'm trying to decide whether to fit my (well campaigned) GIVI panniers...

you say that like it's a good thing

the best looking panniers on a 12 are the bmw ones IMO.

ok, they break & the top box falls off, but hey, that fits the design philosophy of the 12 perfectly ;) :D

I paid for the OE luggage and they may suit the look of the bike, but to be honest, as a functional set of luggage they are cr*p. I had a set of Givis fitted to me old blackbird and i could cram in loads more (or should I say the wife could!). They were better built, cheaper and held two full face helmets. Not only was I disappointed in the ability of the Beemer topbox to only take one, but it also manged to scratch my nice shiny helmet (oooer Mrs). By the way, I'm on my third topbox as the extending mechanism on it siezed on the previous two. My wife says she likes the look of the Givi kit on that GS and I aint gonna argue with her. Going up to Bonny Scotland in July. Wanna lend me them Givis?

Updated Report

OK, so how have the panniers performed on tour?

850 miles in a glorious weekend with Bill Roughton of Bike Tours UK. Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and Lake District in 3 days. Bill runs a fantastic tour, and a lifetimes experience of the areas involved means that he know some really quiet roads, and some great places to ride.

Have to say that the report is mixed. I love the capacity. The fact that I can finally not worry about whether or not I can fit that extra jumper in, or whether SWMBO can pack a standard washbag, or will have to decant what seems like 30 or 40 seperate lotions and potions in to smaller vessels to be able to be accomodated.

The panniers fixings went straight on to the bike - sure they needed a little teasing to get everything to lineup exactly, but more just logic than brute force and ignorance.

The panniers attach first time and lock on in a way that feels secure. I've always got concerns about the security of any panniers, and so would be reluctant to leave anything in any panniers for any length of time. However the ability to remove then quickly and easily make this disappear as an issue.

MAIN CRITICISM - FAT ASS!!! We had to travel through Bradford to transition between the Peaks and the Dales, and this was deeply unpleasant. When you're trying to keep up with a selection of narrower bikes - mostly Triumphs and a spattering of sports bikes - when you feel about 5 feet wide makes filtering on the motorway a real stressful experience. If however I was touring alone I would have taken a longer route, and avoided the whole thing, so not a major issue.

The handling seemed largely unaffected. I spent some time preparing in advance, setting up the suspension to accomodate the additional weight - thanks to all those on this forum who provided advice - to see what I've done look here - http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71857

I also took a quick trip to Devon just to test out the setup. In high wind on the M5 it felt deeply unpleasant - but I find motorways deeply unpleasant at the best of times so maybe that's not the most objective of comments.

I'm really not convinced of their strength in the event of dropping the bike, but I like to try and avoid this wherever possible anyway.

I still believe they're superior to the OE kit. Anyone who prefers form over function then OE is probably for you - anyone who prefers looking at their bike rather than riding it will certainly prefer the OE kit, but I'm not one of those.

Nutter - Have to say that the reason I ruled out the OE luggage was because I'd tried loading my lid at the dealer, and just thought they where shit. I don't think the quality of construction holds up to the price. Lending would certainly be an option, but I'd really not want to remove the whole mounting kit so you'd have to source that.

So, I'm generally happy with the setup, but even more convinced to stay away from cities and motorways as much as possible.

Bit of a late reply admittedly, however I cannot understand anyone who says they're ugly and then tells you to change for some of those industrial storage bins made of metal? Take's all sorts I guess.

I had the same set up on my Aprilia Caponord, brilliant for storing lots of gear, easy on and off and secure. However I found the excessive width a pain, even to the point of mates riding with me commenting on how I was over the centre line in normal travelling, as for filtering, forget it!

I'll now have one of my 3 GIVI boxes as a top box and the BMW system panniers whenever I go away.

As amny others have commented, if any bike is loaded up for travels it isn't going to win any beauty contests, and if it could, well you wouldn't be travelling far or taking much with you.

Having just done a 5 night trip to Scotland I can confirm that the Vario panniers are brilliant........................................

..................... for weekends away! Other than that they don't hold enough stuff and have too much wasted space. the only purpose they did really well was preventing too much damage when I dropped it. Well aside from one of the lugs on the carrier snapping off!

So I will join you Toad and be ordering a set of rails for my already owned GIVI panniers and will use those when i go away in the summer. I have a 46 ltr box and then will use my two 36 ltr panniers which have much more useable space ( all the stuff I got in both BMW panniers basically in one GIVI)

Setting off for Llangollen.

Got there, dropped off the panniers, and I'm ready for unencumbered riding.

Alot better than lugging around all these permanently attached things :D :D
