I know of the service info regarding the shaft check that has now been added to service recommendation, but I have just been quoted £175 to check and lube the splines/shaft
Does this sound reasonable?

Easy enough DIY job that'd save you £175. I had mine checked and the rubber valve fitted to the housing FoC as part of the initial recall checks. When it comes to checking the shaft going forwards, if there is a charge, I'll do it myself and save on the labour charge.

This is a job I am capable of but I am hesitant to carry out any job like that as the bike still has a year of Approved Used Warranty.
Do you think that perhaps the dealer may consider this as breaching warranty terms?

do you have a copy of the revised service schedule?

the shaft inspection & lube is *recommended* at 12,000 mile intervals, not mandatory

has your bike reached 12k?

if yes, how close are you to the 37500 miles where a new one will be fitted? If close, why bother with a lube?

have you had the *free* inspection mandated in the service bulletin and the drain valve fitted? If not, it might be rusty and need a new one anyway. A friend has just had one replaced at 27k.

Wessie, it had the 12,000 just before the revised schedule was released and the bike only has 18,000 on the clock.
I'm not sure about the free inspection

That answers my question, I couldn’t remember if only GSs were covered or all LC models :thumb2

Wessie has the answer :nod

check under the shaft housing - do you have the duck bill, rubber valve? If yes, then the service bulletin was done. If not, ask for the inspection and mod with the 18k service. If the shaft is okay, happy days. Get it lubed at 24k. If it is rusty, happy days, you get a new one with added lube and get it relubed at 30k.

Bike is at the dealer at the moment for the 18000 service. I will call them tomorrow and ask if that is applicable on my bike.

I couldn't care less about the check and lube. Mines in for the 12k service and if they can't be bothered to do it, it's still under warranty.

That brings up an interesting part of the conversation I had with the dealer, I asked if the inspection/lube wasn't carried out as it is not mandatory and the shaft failed, would the shaft be covered by warranty? He was very reluctant to say yes and would only reply ' it should be'

see my reply, it is a recommendation to lube the shaft but you would be paying to do BMW a favour - they have admitted the shaft has a limited service life, let them suck up the cost if it fails. My bike, an R1200RS, was 7.5 years old and at 31000 miles when it was serviced in May. The shaft passed the inspection but they fitted a new one anyway as I was so close to the mandatory replacement mileage. Of course, they had the parts in stock so got some money from BMW for the work!
If I had a newer bike at 18k, I would not be worrying about adding expense to my servicing bill to lube the shaft for a recommendation to save BMW's arse.

I aim to check and re-lube mine every 10K miles. The fact you do it yourself won't invalidate any warranty as long as it's done properly and boot has fresh sealing compound applied and you keep a record of doing it. Even if you don't, as Wessie says, it's advisory, not mandatory so will be covered and you'll get a shaft replacement at 37K miles anyway.

UPDATE, I misheard, it is £125.00

I checked and lubed my shaft a few years ago. It’s an easy job.

As my bike had over 40K miles on the clock it qualified straight away for a new shaft a few months ago. No questions asked. No inspection needed.

BMW’s rule is automatic replacement every 70,000 km ( I think). Low mileage “inspections” are at owner expense.

60,000km, 37500 miles for automatic replacement

the first inspection, on bikes that left the factory without the drain valve is free. Shafts are changed at any mileage if the inspection finds fault. A friend just had his 2017 R1200RS inspected and the shaft was changed at 27,000 miles at BMW's expense.

Lubing the shaft at 12,000 mile intervals is chargeable but as stated above, advisory not mandatory.
