From time to time on light loads I feel a surge/vibration which I think is from the shaft drive, its a bit like a tight spot on a chain drive, and is usually felt when driving at low speeds or when riding solo with the suspension set for two up.
Looking at the microfiche I notice both ends of the shaft have Hooks type universal joints.

I think its universally accepted this type of joint is not very good for transmission through a large angular range and can cause vibration. Can anybody suggest why BMW do not fit normal CV joints as fitted to almost every car these days?

Noticed similar the other day after dropping pillion off and not changing settings.. Changed ESA back to one up and went away. Assumed the same as you, large angles, causing a funny..

Solution, don't ride one up, in 2 up setting. Simples.
