Just got my hands on one yesterday for a dabble.

Looking into the virtues of sideloading android apps at the moment.

Have the panel any particular apps to recommend?

Not mucked about with any android apps yet, mainly because I haven't needed to so far.

I use mine for films and presentations of pics and products mainly.....I did make sure I had an adobe pdf display thingy, but I can't honestly remember if it was bundled or an app.

the music player is a bit clunky as standard (mainly with play lists), but there are several alternatives out....can't remember which I'm using at the moment though :blast

One of the best apps I put on was a PC remote control thingy.......lets me log on to my PC from in bed, start and finish any progs including running PSPro and dreamweaver etc so I can update and edit websites on the PB.......in reality it's just acting as a remote control for the PC but it has been very useful occasionally.

Not much help I know, but i guess it depends on what you need it to do, or expect it to do.

Check out the Spotted A Deal section. There's loads of good stuff there about these devices.

Not had a wi fi connection since I got mine so not able to add any apps yet.

In the meantime I have been getting engrossed in NFS. I find it quite addictive actually.

On looking further at the Android apps there don't seem to be many that are worth the bother. To my albeit not extensive research many of those that seem to have been coded are really just tweaked web page functionality, such as ebay for example, and since the browsing capability of the PB is so good it doesn't warrant fiddling about with to side load in my view.

The PB app list is, well, sparse to say the least, although if I want to purchase a map of Cameroon that seems to be available..

A couple of apps I'm finding useful:

MapApp - which presents Google Maps (the native BB browser doesn't seem to like it very much)
Get It Done - A very nice task and to-do list manager

PodCat seems to be the best Podcast manager, but it isn't saying much, it's very clunky.

As for the Native apps I've found the contact functionality particularly decent, which makes sense given BB's business device orientation, bringing in all of my Google, Facebook and Linked In details to the Contacts component.
The messaging functionality is similarly useful bringing together e-mail accounts and the message components of the above, too :thumb

On the note of films I've burned a number of films to MP4 using DVDfab and quickly nipped them onto the PB. The video play quality of the device is excellent.

Other than that very much enjoying a super device for absolute buttons! :thumb

the only one that I am looking for is decent Kindle functionality!

But I gotta get some time to watch the vid and sideload it whatever that is :D

Just a follow up.. There is no BBC iPlayer download for the B/B OS, but I've come across a funky little PC application called 'Get iPlayer' which allows you to download to an MP4 file.
It looks a little intimidating but there's a good You Tube video on how to operate it, it is very simple..

Got lots of stuff to watch in the gym now, saves being bored out mi' mind!

MapDroyd Offline Mapping

This is an Android App that can be sideloaded to the PB (See previous post on explanation of how to do that) :thumb

The MapDroyd BAR file to use is located here: https://www.box.com/shared/fl0ec63nmoqu1736hlib

The post that hosted the BAR file is here: http://forums.crackberry.com/playbook-apps-games-f243/mapdroyd-offline-pamps-works-fine-os2-665631/ (it is within post 3)

Download this file to your PC. Following the instructions on how to sideload you will be able to install this to the playbook, and voila! :)

GPS works on MapDroyd :)

And the GPS receiver on the PB itself seems pretty good.. GPS location even worked tucked away in the car..

The one I settled on is called "Book reader for EPUB and Kindle books"

Be careful, there are lots of similarly named apps, but this is the mutt's nuts

I got it when it was free, but it's now 75p

Easy to use, imports libraries well, you can customise everything from font , size, background and lettering colours, swiping, orientation lock (which still lets it flip to the 'other' landscape side so that when you turn over in bed and read on your left side rather than right, it flips too :D

I've used it everyday since I got it and thoroughly recommend it :thumb2

THIS is the one:

..The PB has a GPS function?

Where?

It has a full WL1283 chip in it, and as a GPS device, it's pretty good :thumb2

Just go to appworld and do a search on mapping etc, loads of apps there, including ones which use the GPS and the inclimometer together with a planetarium prog so you can point the playbook at the stars and identify them on screen.....as you move the PB, the display moves too....it's very

So I was trying to work out how to set my PB up to be an alarm clock in the same way that you can with a BB handset by setting it to 'bedside mode'

It's not as easy as it could be though*.....you can't set the screen dim to more than 5 mins (IE you can't override it) and the same goes for the standby mode.

What you do though is go to settings (click the cog in the top corner or swipe down from home screen) click 'General' and then enable DEMO MODE.

The password is "instoredemo" but once you've entered it the first time, you can change it to anything.

The reason it's there is so shops can......er......I'll leave it to you to work the rest out :augie

You can then for example leave the PB playing a slideshow so it's become a shelf digital picture screen, a clock, or playing a list of videos or whatever you want :thumb2

(I'm using the BBPB desktop charger pod now, just arrived this morning, will review soon :thumb)

EDIT......Be cautious........one thing the demo mode does is to disable any new files being saved......obviously so people like me can't go into a shop, take a photo with the PB stuck down the missus' knickers and then leave it saved.
It also won't keep any apps that you download in that mode.......sensible, or again, people like me would go and get the strip tease app and leave it playing on the counter :green gri
You have to swip and enter the demo mode PW (or whatever you've changed it to) to get back into normal mode :thumb2

*there are separate apps to do it as well, but I haven't played with any of those yet)

Freemake

Freemake, I've been using this DvD converter program for a week now with a lot of success after failing with the usual Handbrake offering.
Freemake even has a direct setting for the Playbook which makes the process a lot easier as well as being a lot quicker than what Handbrake was reporting. The only problem I had was the spam that tried to download with the main program, (Oople & Conduit) which try and take over your search engine. This took about another 10 minutes to restore back to my original settings. So make sure you read the check boxes before down loading.
