Thanks all.

Are you planning on visiting Yell and Unst or just the main island?

It's not 'the Shetlands'. It's just Shetland. The Lounge Bar in Lerwick for music sessions. The Peerie Shop Café in Lerwick for breakfast and lunch. Get the ferries to Yell and then Unst.

Fair bit to see on Unst, Burrafirth Nature Reserve for Puffins and views of the Cliffs. Drive up the hill to the old RAF Radome, great views from there. Great for fishing too if you’re taking a rod. Trout easily taken on spinners in the lochs. Watch out for sheep on the roads they roam about freely. I lived on Unst for three years, loved it. If the weathers crap though it’s not a nice place to be. It’s definitely worth island hopping across Yell and Unst, cheaper to book all the way up to Unst (at least it was) when boarding the ferry to Yell. Lots of nice beaches too. You have to get the obligatory picture of Bobby’s Bus Shelter too, at Baltasound on Unst.

Jarlshoff at Sumburgh is worth a look as is Scalloway castle and Clickamin Broch in Lerwick and Mousa Broch at Sandwick.

I am from a little village on the west side of the main island called Walls (pronounced "Waas" locally) and the roads around there are in excellent condition and offer some lovely views from the likes of the top of The Scord in Scalloway and the top of the hill at Weisdale as you head west.

If the sun shines you will be fine but as we say: "If you dont like our weather; just hang on a minute" :)
