Trip August 2026 - Stelvio Pass, Davos, Eagles Nest

Thanks to @Wapping and the rest of you with advice, oh, and a session with the Goog, I have a bit more detail now,

Times are an approximation. I need to dive a bit deeper into the route and roads, etc.
Campsites aren't obvious, so I need to do a little more digging there too.
Don't want to arrive somewhere and find there's nowhere to pitch (lol).
In an ideal world, this looks ok for a full day of riding with stops and a bit of a time buffer to find a pitch.
I'm an early riser (no rush) just like to get up and get going. Fiesch could get dropped if I need more time elsewhere :)

I’d look at some of those estimated times over distance.

For example, your Black Forest day is 182 miles in a smidge over three and a half hours. That is an average moving speed of about 52 mph. That of course is non-stop. Stop for half an hour for a combined coffee and fuel stop and you are up to four hours, without trying. Stop for an hour for lunch and it’s five hours….. stop again for an afternoon cup of tea and it’s five and half hours.

Thank you, yeah, that's what I mean about a deeper dive into routes and roads. I'm a long way from finished. Just wanted to show some progress :)

Remember that let’s say you are in France on D roads, signposted with a 80kmph speed we’d limit. Thats 50mph, your actual traveling speed will be lower (let’s say 40mph) over the course of the day, when you account for unforeseen roadworks, traffic, and as @Wapping already mentioned, fuel stops for the horse and yourself, a stop to answer a call of the nature, taking wrong turn and needing to comeback on yourself, poking about the satnav, etc, etc

"taking wrong turn and needing to comeback on yourself, poking about the satnav, etc, etc" 100% thats gonna happen 🤣🤣

Add another 30 minutes to your spreadsheet times on top of what Wapping already has mentioned. You gonna need to tweak your time column, by taking milage, dividing by average speed to get it nearer the real life accuracy. 😁

There’s nothing wrong with a spreadsheet, laying out where you intend to go. It’s only a neater version of a sheet of paper and a pencil.

Look very carefully at your estimated times and equate the mileages to something you can imagine in the UK.

For example: Day six, 206 miles in four hours. That is an average (nonstop) speed of 51 miles an hour, on as yet unspecified roads. You live, I think in the Midlands? Let’s say Coventry. Coventry to Carlisle is about 210 miles, direct by motorway.

Were you to ride from Coventry to Carlisle in the summer on holiday:

A. Would you take every B road to do it?

B. If you left your front door at 08:00, would you expect to be knocking in your first tent peg at midday in Carlisle?

And the same (or similar) the next day, and the day after that and so on for eight days on the trot?

Await your next set of workings with interest.

Trust me mate.

Off motorways your moving average will be 40mph give or take.

Over a 10 hour endurance with 2 hours of breaks that’s 8 riding hours.

That’s 320 miles on a long day with minimal stops.

It’ll get you there but v little time to do anything other than ride or a quick coffee break.

If that’s your thing - kerching

If not, I’d maybe have a few “burn days” on motorways just to get the miles done, thus freeing up other days to have more leisure time.

@djgsa how's the trip planning going?

I'm off to Europe (first time for me on the bike) next Wednesday. Heading to France, then Germany, Austria, Switzerland and, if I like it, might extend the trip a bit :D

First 2 nights accomodation booked, new tyres this weekend, going to be good!

Thank you pal, you 2!

I've decided to extend my trip a little, so dropping into Northern Italy. Bucket list item for me is to visit Lake Como :D

Here is the latest iteration. I've allowed 2 hours of stops. 30min in the morning, 1 hour for lunch and 30min in the afternoon.
Still based on a 50mph average, but I've still yet to go through all the routes/roads with a fine-toothed comb, but it's shaping up very nicely.
That gets me in at decent times. Assuming the occasional wrong turn or traffic hold-up still gives me plenty of daylight.
Other than day one, this is mainly (the equivalent of) A and B roads.
I've checked (or already know all my stops have campsites or hotels nearby (30min ride).
I plan to wing it (ala YouTubers) and worry about actual accommodation when I get near. But I've time enough now to actually book things if I need to
Most of the campsites are "just turn up". I've maid contact with a few possibles. As to how busy they are at the end of August, who knows lol.
Vignette situation I am ok with, just got to check out local travel requirements. I've a high-vis vest and warning triangle already.

Your 50mph average is very very punchy mate.

You’ll have to be going at some speed on open bits to average that.

I’d seriously look at 40 average if you want accurate ish timings. 👍🏽

Your 50mph average is very very punchy mate.

According to his spreadsheet, the average driving speed A to B is sometimes under 50 mph….. and sometimes not.

There again if he plans to see and do ‘stuff’ between A and B (when he’ll not be moving forward) then he’ll maybe need to Vaseline the wheels.

It’s all a bit of a mess, really. But hey, it’s on YouTube…..

I think I now see what the fellow has done:

Saturday 243 miles in seven hours is an average speed of 35 mph. But, if we subtract two hours for his stops, that leaves five hours of moving time, which is 50 mph.

Sunday 182 miles in five and a half hours is an average speed of 33 mph. Again, subtract two hours for his stops, which leaves three and a half hours of moving time, which is 50 mph.

Monday 209 miles in six hours is an average speed of 34 mph. But, we have to subtract his two hours of being stopped. That leaves four hours, which is 50 mph.

Tuesday 132 miles in two and a half hours, which is 50 mph. I guess we don’t subtract his two hours of stoppage time on this day, or he’s covering the 132 miles in half an hour, which is 260 mph.

Tuesday (Stelvio) 53 miles in three hours, which is 17 mph. If we are to subtract two hours here too, that is one hour or 50 mph.

If we combine Tuesday’s two events into one, that gives 185 miles in five and a half hours, which is 33 mph. Subtracting two hours, leaves three and a half hours, which is 50 mph.

Wednesday 173 miles in three and half hours, which is 50 mph. Tricky to subtract the two hours or it’s an hour and a half to travel 173 miles, which is 115 mph.

Wednesday (Eagles Nest) is 34 miles in two and half hours, is 14 mph. Or, if we take away the two hours is half an hour to go 34 miles, which is 68 mph.

When we combine Wednesday two journeys into one, we have 207 miles in six hours, which is 35 mph. If we then subtract two hours, that is four hours, which is 52 mph.

Thursday 206 miles in six hours, is 35 mph. Remove two hours, to give four hours, which is 52 mph.

And so on…..

Clearly the fellow is sure that he is going to average a moving speed of 50 mph on the road, each day, every day…….. Or, he adds the two hours on at the end, which brings the average mph figures down. For example, instead of arriving at 16:00 on the first Saturday, he in reality arrives at 18:00 which is not unreasonable. That results in 182 miles in nine hours (of which two hours are breaks) and an average speed overall of 20 mph, which he should be able to better.

My guess is, using D roads and some N roads but not taking every left, left, right, left, to follow every ‘Must do’ green edged road on a Michelin map, nor stopping every five minutes to admire the views (or the awesome state of your tyres’s chicken strips) somewhere between 35 and 40 mph true average speed.

Any reason you have a time table set?

What if you decide to leave Stelvio pass at 4PM?
