Trip August 2026 - Stelvio Pass, Davos, Eagles Nest

Thanks to @Wapping and the rest of you with advice, oh, and a session with the Goog, I have a bit more detail now,

Times are an approximation. I need to dive a bit deeper into the route and roads, etc.
Campsites aren't obvious, so I need to do a little more digging there too.
Don't want to arrive somewhere and find there's nowhere to pitch (lol).
In an ideal world, this looks ok for a full day of riding with stops and a bit of a time buffer to find a pitch.
I'm an early riser (no rush) just like to get up and get going. Fiesch could get dropped if I need more time elsewhere :)

I’d look at some of those estimated times over distance.

For example, your Black Forest day is 182 miles in a smidge over three and a half hours. That is an average moving speed of about 52 mph. That of course is non-stop. Stop for half an hour for a combined coffee and fuel stop and you are up to four hours, without trying. Stop for an hour for lunch and it’s five hours….. stop again for an afternoon cup of tea and it’s five and half hours.

Thank you, yeah, that's what I mean about a deeper dive into routes and roads. I'm a long way from finished. Just wanted to show some progress :)

Remember that let’s say you are in France on D roads, signposted with a 80kmph speed we’d limit. Thats 50mph, your actual traveling speed will be lower (let’s say 40mph) over the course of the day, when you account for unforeseen roadworks, traffic, and as @Wapping already mentioned, fuel stops for the horse and yourself, a stop to answer a call of the nature, taking wrong turn and needing to comeback on yourself, poking about the satnav, etc, etc

"taking wrong turn and needing to comeback on yourself, poking about the satnav, etc, etc" 100% thats gonna happen 🤣🤣

Add another 30 minutes to your spreadsheet times on top of what Wapping already has mentioned. You gonna need to tweak your time column, by taking milage, dividing by average speed to get it nearer the real life accuracy. 😁

There’s nothing wrong with a spreadsheet, laying out where you intend to go. It’s only a neater version of a sheet of paper and a pencil.

Look very carefully at your estimated times and equate the mileages to something you can imagine in the UK.

For example: Day six, 206 mikes in four hours. That is an average (nonstop) speed of 51 miles an hour, on as yet unspecified roads. You live, I think in the Midlands? Let’s say Coventry. Coventry to Carlisle is about 210 miles, direct by motorway.

Were you to ride from Coventry to Carlisle in the summer on holiday:

A. Would you take every B road to do it?

B. If you left your front door at 08:00, would you expect to be knocking in your first tent peg at midday in Carlisle?

And the same (or similar) the next day, and the day after that and so on for eight days on the trot?

Await your next set of workings with interest.

Trust me mate.

Off motorways your moving average will be 40mph give or take.

Over a 10 hour endurance with 2 hours of breaks that’s 8 riding hours.

That’s 320 miles on a long day with minimal stops.

It’ll get you there but v little time to do anything other than ride or a quick coffee break.

If that’s your thing - kerching

If not, I’d maybe have a few “burn days” on motorways just to get the miles done, thus freeing up other days to have more leisure time.
