I didn't want the Autocom boom mic getting trapped and twisted every time I opened and shut the helmet front so here's my solution - embed it in the chin bar.

Ok, some guys have asked me to post this. Firstly there is no "modification of the helmet" that, IMHO, affects the intrinsic safety of the helmet (wonder how many "you shouldn't do that" posts I'll get?) I'm happy to strip and fit my helmet - ooh er Matron, but I leave it up to you to decide if you wish to go this far.

Step 1: Remove Visor (If you need help here stop now!)

Step 2: Remove Wind trims from hinge using a pick and pulling gently from the rear.

Step 3: Using 5mm allen key remove threadlocked (yep threadlocked) hinge pivot bolts. Did I say Threadlocked? Yep, YOU MUST THREADLOCK AND TORQUE THESE BACK UP ON FINAL ASSEMBLY.

Step 4: Remove the plastic bushes and put to one side.

Release the chin bar with the centre release button and remove chin bar from the helmet body.
Unscrew the inner lining from the chin bar. 3 screws, one either side and one hidden under the peel off plastic in the very centre of the chin bar.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to put all pics on one post so I'll carry on in another post

Good pictures Rob but have you made sure that you have got enough free movement or length on the boom to allow for the correct microphone positioning?

Hi Rich, don't know if you've worn a multitec but there isn't enough room for your beard between the chin bar and your head! Seriously, you can adjust that how you like on the bulid up but I find that the natural dimple in the chin bar is tops for me (also the vox doesn't get kicked in by ambients as much)

Ive tried a few on and the chin guards were not close to my face at all, but as long your mic and system work as well as they should do then I am happy.

Hi

I'm new to the forum, I also have a Multitec and have recently bought an Autocom super pro avi.

I really like what you've done here and I am very tempted to do the same on mine.

Have you any idea of the torque setting required for the main (threadlocked) hinge pivot bolts? Also, what type of racket string did you use to replace the wire for the latch? Will any be strong enough?

Thanks in advance
Michael

Welcome to the Madhouse Michael! The torque might be different and I'd hate to advise so speak to Shoei. As for the raquet string, it's not taking much strain so something of the same guage as the Bowden cable your taking out, as long as it runs freely.

Thanks Rob

I emailed Shoei a few days ago but nothing as yet. I suppose as long as its tight, threadlocked and it all goes back the same way then it'll be fine.

Might be putting your guide to the test before long!

Sorry to resurrect this but I've just realised I never did get round to posting again on here.

I did eventually get round to fitting my autocom mic into the chin bar and have to say its been brilliant :)

I was wrong to be worried about the torque settings of the bolts, when I dismantled mine they were hardly tight at all and certainly got refitted (and threadlocked) better than they were from new!

I used yellow fishing line to replace the bowden cable, which has done the job fine. It was however sometimes needing encouragement to close the latches so i dismantled it again and oiled it all and bent the little brackets that the springs attaches to which has done the trick! I bent it so that the springs are a bit tighter and also so that the latch closes a bit tighter. I did need to add the locking wire!

Thanks for sharing this! The thread was very usefull and I didn't feel I needed to ask any questions! I'll certainly be looking to do this to my future helmets.

Michael
