The problem of course, is the grass is always greener.......except that sometimes once we move we notice ours was greenest, but we simply stopped noticing because it's there everyday.

You do have a VERY valid point:thumb

KTM

DON'T DO IT
the bmw will sulk
and the ktm couldn't do the long way round with charlie boardman and that euen Magregor dude so merrrrrrrrrr !!!!

hahaha

When you open up a KTM 950 you'll think you have a petrol leak. :beerjug:

Take a good long look a the photos you posted, that is one outstanding looking bike. You describe it as mint and fully loaded. Meaning, I assume, you've spent time and money making it just as you like it. Now, of course, we all enjoy pastures new, but are you really going to find so much difference between your 1150 and a 990? Enough to think you won't regret changing? Are you going to change your riding style so much that a 990 will be a big improvement? I suspect none of these, as your bike is obviously set up for what you like from two wheels. Having said all of this, I too am as temtped as anyone to see what life's like as a KTM owner, but I'm lucky enough to not be able to afford of thinking of swapping over.

You will be very sorry if you swap that GS for a KTM.

Every tour I have been on the KTM just breakdown or bits fall off, however the BMW were no problem (and there was a vast range from 1100 GS to 1200GSA).

As said above the KTM is a competition bike made to go on the road - so expect uncomfortable seats, hard to get tyres.

Personally I would stay with your GS - that is one really good looking bike.

For the moment the more I read about the KTM the less likley I am to change and there is no other bike on the market I like.....

( and that inc's the BMW 1200 GSA hence I'm considering KTM now)

Looking at the photo’s of your bike, you should hold on to it.

Looks like a lot of time, effort and care has gone into it.

Going by reports I have read on GS’s, yours looks better than new !

Instead of trading your bike with your mate...why don’t the both of you do a loan swap for a few months ?

You both will still own the bike you love, but will have extended time with another to play about on.

If that doesn’t work, I will swap my wife for your GS or your friends KTM , will even throw in some cash !!!!

I have done over 800 miles on a weekend many times with my KTM, fitted with the standard gel seat, with no problems.
Some models/ages do not have gel seats, and they are not so comfy.

The GS's I have ridden have been a lot more comfertable/softer that my KTM...but the rideing style is very different as well.

oh yes yes yes :thumb2

That is a great looking GS :thumb2

Well the only reason the mate of mine wants the GSA ( mine) is because mines also mint and fully kitted. I think he decided he wanted one when we did a tour of France/ Belgium battlefields in autumn 2007
( but he was on a transalp then)
Nothing wrong with the build quality/ finish of my '52' plate BM and its got 21,000miles now and no corrosion on the front forks from new! ( lucky or what)

He isn't in any rush to change and niether of us are sure we are just both a bit bored with our mounts at present.

He won't be selling his KTM unless he finds a GSA ( mine or like mine)first....
and he will sell the KTM after the GSA purchase ( unless we do a swap/ px deal)

For the moment the more I read about the KTM the less likley I am to change and there is no other bike on the market I like.....

Cheers all for the useful information

I'd say the same as has been said above, go for it, you've got nothing to loose... but the guys a mate right and you've already done at least one trip together, you both obviously look after your bikes, so...

why dont you arrange another trip maybe just a long weekend and swap bikes for the trip. You'll get to know if you could cope with the 20yo nymph and if you spend you're time looking longingly at the 1150 you'll know you've made the wrong call... nothing lost...

Not that I've ever tried it, but I guess it would be like swinging but for bikes...

Great thread and a nice excuse to picturefest your old 1150adv :D

Your a funny man :D but maybe that's another reason to go orange then.

In summary.

Your best option is to actually take a 950/990 out and give it a proper go before you make a decision.

Bet you decide to change. :D

I've got a foot in both camps; HP2Megamoto and 950 SM . Probably not the sort of thing that you are after. However, one area that i would suggest that you investigate is the Service and After Sales Strengths (or not) of your prospective KTM Dealer. There are BIG differences. Pidcocks (BMW) have been really good. I've not yet found a KTM Dealer that i've developed any Rapport with.Though,in fairness, most big KTM Dealers are more "Off Road" oriented . Maybe it's me that's out of step ? :nenau

Well I bought my GSA off this web site from BIG DEN ( indirectly via a lad who didn't keep it for long) I looked at about 5 bikes when I sold my AT and bought this one on first look.
The GSA only had about 14,000miles on when I purchased it, It was pretty much mint and just needed luggage and a bit of 'bling'

The KTM deal may happen but the more I read the less likely it looks

I caught sight of myself in a shop window on the KTM as I rode it round the block.
I made it look like a small trail bike beneath me.....
I'm not a little fella ( see the picture below)
Perhaps the grass in greenest where I am...

still when I retire ( ten months) I may buy a KTM to go with the GSA....
now theres a thought

Cheers

Sounds like you need an SE :

And I may need a GSA again to take girlfriend on back,as luggage carrying 2 up is a tad limited on my KTM.
