As far as I believe, all 1100/1150, and presumably 1200s have these dimples. I believe they might be there to fit a clamping tool into whilst removing the cap or as part of the machining process instead of clamping onto the smooth surface of the fork leg.

Think you might be right - in which case the whole fork modification sags must boil down to simply checking the torque of the fork cap and perhaps thread-locking it? to make sure that it won't loosen over time - just sounds like a sensible precaution to me.

From a Friend who has a Dealership in the states

all of those recalls were addressed prior to the bikes getting into the customers hands. Running engineering changes were immediately made on the production line as is a common practice.
