An '85 with PD tank, cast iron disc, braided line, Technoflex shock, prog' springs, bit of tlc and some new paint. Complete with local Wehrmacht style leather bags.
Pics taken on the old truck route thru the Andes from Mendoza, Argentina to Chile. What a road...
I thought the number looked familiar , that g/s is in my shed in devon waiting for a gearbox overhaul and valve job.Would you know any history of the bike? What happened to that big alloy tank
In about 1985 my mate Dave bought it after seeing how well the G/Ss performed on the local trails. He gave it a hard life! No trail too dangerous! But he certainly looked after it well, always tinkering with it. The bike was entered in a few enduro/road trials events – the Midland Classic Motorcycle Club allowed BMs in their pre 65 events.
We were planning a trans Africa trip, hence the alloy tank. But sadly he was killed in late 88 (non motorcycling related) less than a week after the pictures above were taken.
I’ve got some more pics if you want me to send them (or I’ll post them up here).
I would be most interested in any pictures of this g/s, the bike is now sporting the blue body-work much like the other g/s in your picture. I too have used this bike for some really deep and rutted green laning much to the surprise of my dr 350 and yz426 riding buddies, seriously good bike , i plan on doing a lot of trail riding in europe when the bike is sorted .
Hi Colt,
Thanks for the compliment, the PD tank transforms the looks and gives it the obvious greater range!!!
I saw the tank on various bikes and wanted one, but not the plastic HPN, that is not so elegant! Did a bit of research and found the Micapeak site that lists all the options made in various materials and capacities including the steel 32 ltr PD factory option. Still available from BMW in primer at a price. I bought mine through Motobins on one of their 10% off days but it still cost over £400... but with fresh paint doesn't it look great!!!
Still available as far as I know, I have copied the details below from the Micapeak G/S 'tanks and options' section...
"Steel tank...
Original BMW PD steel tank for the "old" R 80 G/S PD (BMW piece Nr.16111453914): 32 liters (8.45 gal.) available for 992,- DM, not painted, but prepared for paint. You need also some additional parts (a second petcock and junction to the fuel lines, 4 rubber parts to place on the frame, 2 BMW logos (70mm), the decals if you want and the very good rubber knee-pads) and I have no idea of the price for all this numerous "small" things."
thanks charlie.
the tanks are out there somewhere.
two on ebay went for silly money.then i was offered one for 700euro.
still too much.
although when you pric eup say an adventure 1150gs tank its not so bad.
but it is a lot compared to the purchase price of the g/s.
