Round 'n' round in circles.........
I am running Windows XP Home Edition, and something has changed when I go to close it down?

As I normally do it..........click on "Start" and select "Turn Off Computer", a small pop up appears in the centre of the screen and gives you three options, "Turn Off", "Restart" or "Hibernate".

When I used to click on "Turn Off" a message came up that said something like Windows is saving data, do not turn off!

Then after a few moments that message would alter and it would say "It is now safe to turn off the computer".

But it has stopped giving me that message?

When I now click "Turn Off Computer" the screen just goes black, no messages about saving data, or when its safe to switch it off?

Any thoughts why it has changed and what may have happened to make it change?

Sounds almost like it's just powering off the display and going into hibernation.

Check the settings under 'power' in control panel and make sure it thinks it should be shutting down rather than hibernating.

sounds like someone's turned on APM (advanced power management) under power options in control panel.

should really be set up that way as default.

don't know why it would have enabled on it's own though

Looking in the Power Options section in the Control panel, the "Enable Hibernation" box is ticked and the "Enable APM support" is not ticked.

Is that correct?

well, i have no tick in the hibernation box (i never use it) & no "Enable APM support" option at all as i think it's enabled by default.

options are also dictated by what motherboard one has & CMOS setup, but i wouldn't be concerned about that unless your clock is losing time as well.

no tick in APM usually means the pc will tell you "it is safe to turn off your pc" & you have to physically do it yourself, so yours is a bit odd to me. personally i'd tick it & then let it turn off on it's own.
