I have a 2008 R1200GS, short rear shock and lowered seat, but find that on it's side stand it still leans over quite a long way. Courtesy of an RTA some years ago I struggle to get the bike off it's side stand on uneven ground and or with luggage.

According to Touratech I am not going to find a side stand extender - for a lowered GS - so does anyone know of anyone making/supplying extenders for lowered GS's?

Thanks

Mark

Migsel do a stainless steel adjustable sidestand for the R80/100 GS which is top quality ( and top price !)

You might just be able to talk him into making/adapting one for a 1200 - its about the right time of year for his Christmas production run ;)

You won't find one on the Migsel site. as they are 'specials' anyway, but do a search on here & you'll come up with some photos

What about fitting a side stand from a standard bike without the lowered shock option?

I have lowered Wilbers on my 2006 GS and the original side stand, this is OK. The bike doesn't lean at much of an angle on the stand, the only thing is that you sometimes need to put some thought into where it is parked if the ground is sloping left to righr as thisd tends to leave the bike a little too vertical on the side stand. It's not really a problem though, and could be easily fixed by trimming a little length off the stand if you wanted to.

Why not simply just cut it in two and weld in a sleeve to make it a bit longer?. Any engineering shop would sort this out no probs.

Get a piece of aluminium billet shaped the right size and height, drill the side stand, tap the aluminium block and bolt your new foot on. Saw a GSA owner who had done just that. You'll get off cuts of ali off ebay for a few quid :)

Or go to your local shoe repair shop with an outline of your side stand foot and ask them to shape a boot heel in that shape or if you want a bigger foot for the soft sand just draw the outline accordingly. Drill and screw together, Simples! Satisfaction and money saved.

I made one very similar to the motorcycleparts one out of 25mm MDF, I took a template of the stands foot, then made an MDF foot 1cm larger all round, this give me a larger surface for the bike to stand on, giving less surface pressure meaning the bike can stand on softer surfaces without worry and the extra size gave me plenty of room to put screws with large heads in to hold it in place and not having to drill through the existing foor. Painted it black, varnished it to seal it and stuck a bit of carpet tile underneath to finish it off.

Had it on the bike for a week and took it off :blast as it held the bike too upright and I had to take particular attention where I parked it.

But it was a funn little project to keep me amused for a couple of evenings

I see you're in Northolt, I'm only in Hillingdon, you can come and have a look if you think something like what I've described might do.

What? Ride from Norfolk to Hillingdon to see some sort of homemade contraption that was so unsuitable you took it off after a few days.... That's some offer you've made there ;)

PS Your whole post did make me laugh though, and was a distinct improvement on 'What tyres shall I buy?' :beerjug:

Northolt (West London), not Norfolk.

And apologies. I noted the Northolt location this morning; it needs updating to Southend, but thanks for the offer anyway.

I have ordered the "lowered" extension and I will see how I go. I currently have to find a suitable spot to park - based on dodgy leg - such that the bike is not leant over too far just so I can push the thing upright. I think my need to be able to get on and lift the bike off it's stand is my overriding concern.

HORNIG

Try a HORNIG Side stand foot enlargement (lowered) for BMW R1200GS
R1200GS 2008. Excellent kit, raises the sidestand by just enough & doubles the footprint. Had one for years & no problem. Regards Gary

I did a similar thing to spikidave, but used 10mm marine ply. Marked the outline of the foot, added about 5mm around, and fitted that. I drilled 4 holes thro the sidestand foot, and then used selftappers into the ply. Works a treat. To make it more permanent you could glue it as well as the screws.
I think that 15 or 20mm is a better thickness, as the bike is still along way over with the suspension on 2up + luggage, but, thats the next project.

Some GS's didn't come with sidestands:nenau
