Before I consign the idea to the rubbish pile of mad projects that were never ment to be, Has anyone, or does anyone know if it is even possible to mount a street legal sidecar on a R100GS?

See loads of them in Europe on rallies, saw this in 2005 at Horizons meet up in Derbyshire

Anything is possible and can be made legal. As long as the sidecar is mounted on the correct side it should not be a problem.

Thanks! OK - so its possible. any ideas how/where they fix to?

If you`re asking that level of question when you`ve got a bike of your own to look at as well as photos freely available on the Internet via easy searches, you`d probably be better off contacting any of the following

Hedingham

Watsonian Squire

MPC Ural

F2 Motorcycles

Not my style sorry, if I wanted to buy one I would.

I wasn`t suggesting you buy a Ural if that`s what you thought.

I was referring to getting advice on fitting a sidecar and setting up.

Universal kits and adaptor kits are available for various types of bike and sidecar.

If you want more GS specific stuff look in the Hacks Forum on ADVrider and do some searches.

Unit sidecars do the one in the pic its the ETH stupid expensive though-like £5500 expensive ,not the origional company either, they went chips over christmas,so its all a bit iffy, I backed ,out if they go to the wall while they have your bike it could be a nightmere to get back!!,try looking at dauntless motors in U.S they do some nice stuff, shipping is the only draw back.
Failing all that dave at f2 could fit a sidecar with tits to a cow for the right money

Sorry I don't know dude, can take some pictures of my chang and you can possibly make decisions based on that design. Will only be over the weekend though when I get into the garage with a camera :D

You can see one of the struts mounted to the frame but will take some more pictures to give you an idea.

As some of the other guys recommended might be good to speak to the specialists to get an idea of how to mount it.

Some more pics from the Elephant rally

The Germans will stick a sidecar on a monocycle if you give them half a chance :D

You`ll see from photos that pretty much any sidecar chassis uses 4 fixing points to the bike.

You`ll see from looking at your own bike where these could be...or where an adaptor plate or frame may need to be mounted.

As has been said, 4 fixing points required. A point to note is that one of the usual pick up points is around the area of the rear passangers footrest is attached, which for a UK sided chair is where the exhaust is ( the lefthand rear footrest is in fact attached to the exhaust on a R100GS, this is fine for a footrest but not a chair fixing point )

The other point to note is that R100GSs are known to have 'flexi front forks'. This will become even more evident if a chair is attached.

Charnwood Classics near Leicester is another supplier of sidecar stuff

A 1100GS is a fine sidecarmachine.
On this (dutch) website the owner explains how he build his combination. I think the pictures explain for themselves. Otherwise you can use google to translate. In the netherlands we don't have to MOT and sidecars are not registered, as long as it's considered safe you can build what you like.
There is also a sidecar manufactured for the R1100/all. It is the Triptec Heeler. It uses the same two holes in the crankcase as Ruud from the link above does and has the German TUV approval, which is pretty mean. http://www.tripteq.com/ I'm currently driving a solo GS and a K75 sidercarcombination but my next sidecar will be surely a R1100 combination, and probably a GS:JB:JB

Wow- what a response - thanks everyone! What started out with me thinking everyone would tell me it was mad or impossible or both, has now turned into a distinct possibility. I contacetd Charnwood Classics who have offered me a fitting kit for £135 + VAT and advised that it is possible to home build a chassis, as long as your insurance company are ok with it. So watch this space . . .

Bill, I may be about 2 years too late, but I'm now the UK importer for tripteq sidecars.
They are suitable for self-build & can be fitted to 2v beemers.
Give me a shout if your in need of any info.
