My standard GS1150 has a real problem with the sidestand, when the suspension is jacked up for two up riding with luggage, the bike leans at a ridiculous angle when on the sidestand. I tried the mod of putting on an adventure stand and to be honest it was only slightly better.
The problem seems to be made worse by the fact that the frame bush in which the pivot bolt runs has a 10.6 mm hole in it when the pivot bolt is 10mm. Turning up a new bush bored out to 10 mm removed the slop but in the pivot but the lean angle was still a nightmare.
Thats when I decided that more radical action was needed. I got a length of high tensile steel bar 95mm long and on either end turned 25mm lengths down to a diameter of 16mm (the inside diameter of the sidestand tube), the centre 45mm section was turned down to 21mm the outside diameter of the sidestand.
I then cut my original GS sidestand just below the part nos stamping and inserted the extension plug. It has yet to be welded up but having done a trial run the bike sits on the stand at a sensible angle , it is less likely to topple and much easier to lift off the stand when loaded.
The extension cannot be any longer as if it is the sidestand will hit the exhaust gaurd where the pipe enters the silencer.
Hopefully it will work and once its powder coated be unnoticeable.

I made an alloy 'foot' up for my 1100 side stand its about 12mm thick. The bikes now much more stable on soft ground and sits at a better angle. Also makes it easier to lift of the stand when sat on the bike.

12mm thick piece of ally bolted to underside works well. Mine increases footprint by large margin to reduce risk of sinking in soft ground. If you make one similar to mine, there's no reducton in ground clearance. Any thicker & you may run in to clearance issue with the centre stand when folded up:

ADV sidestand just catches on std. GS mainstand. hopefully cutting & shutting with a slug in one as Neil W suggests will extend beyond & miss it??
