Suddenly my PC has stopped making the windows sounds on start up, mail call etc. etc. The thing still plays cd's, MP3's and radio it's just the windows sounds that are missing. This used to happen internittently but would reset on start up but not any more. I'm running Windows XP home with a celeron processor.

Any ideas guys?

got a check in the mute box of the wave section perhaps?

accessed by double clicking speaker icon in system tray (near clock)

otherwise problem may lie in the sound properties accessed via control panel.

Nope tried all that, it just dissapeared on it's own I didn't actually do anything

so all the relevant program events are enabled in sound & audio properties?

do they work if you play them from that panel?

i may have to think harder on this.

I've tried double clicking on the sounds in the control panel and am met by a loud silence! However the media player is still working

got any non standard sound mixers, equalisers etc. the sort of thing that comes free with sound cards? something like that may have the wave slider down.

have you installed any new software lately?

What happens if you open Windows Media Player and try and play a .wav file? Does it play then?

May be something to do with File Associations.

I've sorted it, I think. It would appear that one of the updates that were downloaded in the last week blocked the Windows sound. I reconfigured the PC to two days ago and it's back working. I suspect Mcafee anti spyware. :D

Thanks for the help guys :thumb :thumb :thumb
