Silencers, why 2 into 1, when others 2-2?

Why do all / most other twin cylinder bikes have a two into two silencers? Or maybe the question should be, why does the GS have a two into one, while the others are two into two?
Is it just a size issue?
Or is it a power issue, I have always assumed that 2-2 gives more power. I have read before that with a four cylinder bike that a 4-2 gives more lower torque than a 4-1 system.
Any thoughts anyone? It's not as if I'm going to change to 2-2 is it?

I don't think that it's so much to do with power or torque, more that it is neater, simpler, lighter, cheaper and only interferes with one pannier.

The length and bore of the downpipes effects low down torque, the longer they are the more grunt you get.

On 4 cylinder bikes a 4-2-1 system genrally gives more torque.

Just think if you had a 2-2 system on the GS you'd have two small panniers and a heavier bike. :D

Silencers would be nice tucked up like on the v-strom, wouldn't they? As for the weight issue, I hardly think that at the time BMW were concerned about that, it weighs the same as a baby elephant!

I'm no exhaust expert but I believe the 2-1 layout produces pressure pulses that help draw the exhaust gases from the cylinders and keep power/torque up... maybe.

As an example the Remus race 2-2 system actually robs the S of power and drops the top speed to about 130. To confuse the issue though, the Staintune 2-2 doesn't upset things and possibly gives a small increase in power

I'd guess BM did a bit of R&D before sticking a 2-1 system on their bikes ;)

they all use waterbased paint , cant use more uesfull paints as they have ....... something in them that has been banned

tbh the 2-2 looks better , and produces a nicer noise , but im sure bmw had their resons for the 2-1

VOC's Volatile Organic Compounds. Present in old type car paint, concrete sealer. Too much pollution, banned. Other bike manufactures have managed, why not BMW?

umm they havent

u find me a jap or italian bike that will put up with as many miles or the british winter ....

not mileage as in motot or cycle parts , just paint rubbing of tanks and fairinf pannells ... my vfr800 was crap for this , i wor the pain on the tank off in 40k with my thigs and the pain on the foot pegs and frame went in even less time (where my boot rubbed on it)
