silly asking prices

In doing a search of 50 GS/GSA bikes where the listings have come to an end only 10 have sold.

The 10 that show 'sold' were all listed as 'private' listings.
The 40 unsold are either 'classifieds' or 'best offers'.

Unsold varied from £4200 - £11,970

Those that 'sold' were:-

2005 (04) GS 28K Miles @ £4800
2006 (06) GS 3,341 @ £5352 **
2007 GS 12,937 @ £6000 **
2008 GS 5,300 @ £7609.09
2010 GSA 3,383 @ £10,500
2009 GS 42,931 @ £6900
2005 GS 44,000 @ £4700
2009 GS 8,000 @ £7500
2007 GS 4,100 @ £7500 **


Classified fixed price listings show no interest.
Most were sold through bidding with a few sales on 'best offer'.
Only one sold with But It Now'.

A dealer local to me has the following:-

2006 GS 8,368 @ £6695 **
2007 GS 6,801 @ £7995 **

i believe the gs 2006 model was the one i just bought on monday i got a good deal on it i recon that bike is worth about 6000.i just got in quick on am auction.i have been looking for a bike for 2 months now.the obsevation i made is that 30000 miles or under you pay about 1000£ per year ie 2006 model is £6000 for a gs and about extra £1000 for gsa ie 2008 gsa £9000.just a rough guide.the above 2 bikes from dealers i would guess were gsa s.

Why haven't the prices of second hand GS dropped? Simple, they are generally bought by the more how shall we say, well heeled who may not be hurting quit so much in the recession. GS owners are generally older and more financially settled that your average crotch rocket owner or Focus owner for that matter. Coupled with the fact that new they aren't particularly expensive in the first place. OK they aren't a cheap bike by any means but they don't have an over inflated price either like a certain US brand of bike or if you go to the car market, BMW cars or any luxury car where the price is massively inflated just because it is what it is. All this leads to a great re-sale value whether private or dealer.
As others have said, if you don't like the private prices then go buy from a dealer. Why complain, go where you perceive the best deal to be. Surely your not complaining because you think you should be able to by a bike privately for 2K less than a dealer but the market doesn't actually allow you to do so?

Both of those bikes are less than 10 miles from me and both are the GS , not GSA.

You'd have got a cheaper bike in Nov / Dec / Jan but now it's April and the sun is shinning a bit more all the bikes go back up in price.........GS's were definitely cheap back then......

I think some owners do over value their steed, I have always priced my bikes well and sold them quick, but you need amargin in it as everyone likes to haggle.

I have seen lesser spec'd 2006 models here being advertised for more than I would expect for my '08 model.

I know a BMW dealer would give me about £6.5k for the bike if spending an extra £3k on a newer one, which means it is probably only worth £6k to them and they would probably advertise it for £8.5k having cleaned and warrantied it leaving them a margin to haggle / up a px value.

If selling I would want to get about £7.5k with luggage (and it has 6 months warranty on it so close to a grand saving over a dealer and I may throw in a couple of other extra's.

I have sold all but one of my bikes in the past to the first to see (the other went to the second to see) and some have just gone directly to mates who have asked for first refusal.

I have never "made a killing" on, or "given away" a bike, quick simple hasle free sales.

If the OP does not like the price he does not have to pay it, he can call the seller and offer less, look elsewhere or come round to my gaff and make a sensible offer on my GS anytime.

How do you know there was no interest in the fixed price classified adds?
You dont know what has gone on between the seller and the buyer behind the scene.
Just because the advert may still show, means nothing.Half the add,s in the MCN etc are old add,s or of bikes sold.

I don't 'know'. I was merely replicating the stats that were in front of me on the search. The listings weren't still showing, they were time lapsed listings which are as good a guide as you will get that a sale wasn't reached on that occasion.

It doesn't make any difference if there were 10,000 enquiries, the fact remains that they showed up as unsold at their listed prices.

I've sold two bikes through Ebay "classified ads" in the last 6 months. Any that appear not to have sold - are probably just that. If someone has sold their bike - the last thing they want is more people texting and e-mailing them for the next month or so.

No shortage of people who realise that the listed price - is open to a bit of negotiation.

I think the OP needs to look at a £7,000 bike and think that the seller has built in a bit for negotiation - and look at it as being around £6,600 to purchase?


Of course - you get the nobs who text you with "Will you accept £5,000 for a quick sale, mate?"
