I have had my 2001 twin spark for a month or two now. I bought an f650 because of their excellent reputation for fuel economy, i am doing a lot of running around at the moment and wanted something mega cheap. I knew the single spark would be less efficient than the twin spark but i'm only getting between 56mpg and 63mpg gentle riding. not as amazing as i was hoping. anyway what i'm wondering is how easy it would be to convert to twin spark and what would be involved? new head or machining the old one, would it need remapping, etc. etc. ?

Fuel consumption should be a lit better than that from a single spark:thumb

Correctly serviced and the right tyre pressures and that's about it. The money you'll spend on a twin spark conversion would be better spent on putting to a newer twin spark. With frugal riding a twin spark will manage 75ish mpg.

Try leaving the ecu unplugged for 20 mins+.

Starting: always ignition on wait for warning light/check to go out and never touch the throttle whilst starting.

really. what does that do? reset something?

Resets the bms-c (ecu). The throttle position sensor is set on start, so if the throttle is open it will be incorrectly calibrated.
