SJ oils

Why??

The comparison data is for motorcycle oils with wet clutches hence the high Zinc content to give the clutch some biting power, since the GS has a dry clutch and is low revving any car engine oil is fine, there is no advantage to fully synthetic oils in a 1913 design engine.
Castrol GTX Magnatec semi synth or equivalent is the most this engine needs.

sorry

I was actually referring to the whole article, not to that chart

http://www.ibmwr.org/otech/oilreport.html

I was tempted by a mineral 15w50 at halfords (10 quid for 6 liters) but it's an SJ so I think I'll avoid it and stick to castrol GP 10w-40 (API SG).
Peace of mind...

In case somebody needs to know...

I asked Halfords' customer service what the % of zinc and phosphorus are in their SJ oils and they even replied!

"...we can confirm that the zinc level will be between 0.137 and 0.180% and the phosphorus between 0.120 and 0.168%."

Which are more or less the same values as a B#W oil...maybe a bit to high for the cat.

Wet clutch

castrol GP and any other bike oil is for wet clutch bikes, you don't need it, yours is a dry clutch like a car hence the lack of additives like zinc.

agree

Yep, but still I wanted to use what B*w recommends and found it difficult to find an SG SH or SF oil... Looking at some threads I got the impression that Castrol GP is one of the most used in the first 15,000 miles, and it's cheap!
