Hmmm..thats just a long stud that goes right through the engine cases..shouldn't be any oil there at all !!! Unless someone has oiled the engine mounting stud and the heat of the engine has caused that small amount of oil to travel along the stud and out at the spacer then I really don't know what / where that oil is from.:nenau
Has it ran down from one of the lower pushrod/oil return tubes ( they leak at the rubber seal where it enters the crankcase) ? http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99505&highlight=pushrod

Either way..looks like nothing to worry about........

...yet !!! ;)

This picture taken from front.
I did'nt see any oil coming out of the opposite right-hand side. I'll take a closer look tomorrow, like you say, it could have come from above and been cleaned up before I purchased the bike and now it's weeping out the joints after me getting it nice and hot over the weekend :)

It was a condition of the sale from the previous owner that I keep his pride and joy clean

:topic Sometimes my brother Johnny uses my name, but not never heard of Tarka, is she from Devon?

It looks more like the grease that's been used on the engine bolt has melted and run out. Nothing to worry about and a good sign. Most engine bolts get left to rot in the engine block. The bolt was probably fitted from the left hand side - by the time it gets all the way through the surplus has been rubbed off, thats why you only have it on one side. If you ever grease and fit one you will know what I mean :thumb2

Now if it was covered in its official "Anti Corrosion" layer of grease and grime you wouldn't be worried :)

Nice Shiny Basic

Obviously one of Garys bikes.
He makes Tarka look like a "can't be bothered" type of feller:augie
Agree with Rob and the others, bolts lubrication using capillary action:thumb2
With No Lubrication those bolts can be right bastards to remove:spitfire ask Bakerlonglegs:rolleyes:

you sure its oil, not a good colour. check the bolt is torqued up properly the stuff looks like its aluminium dust with a drop of water. BTW its far too clean

It may look clean on the outside!

Removed the bolt and found corrosion both ends, the corrosion was making the bolt tight fitting. A thin film of gease was visable on left side of the bolt as predicted by Rob :)

Torque setting

Pushed the bolt back easy by hand.
Noticed corrosion on the back of the nuts :(

Anyone know the torque setting for this bolt?

Thanks for the help :thumb2

Except for the 1991 R80/100GS which is 64 lbf.ft, all the rest are 52 - 57 lbf.ft. (Haynes Manual, Section 2.10) You DO have a manual, don't you Stephen?

That bolts been smoothrited :augie

Glad to see you're doing it properly Stephen :thumb

Better check the back one while you're at it :)

Manual

Now why would I need one of these? whenI get great input from you guys?
Many thanks, Kenny, MMC, Rob, Proff, BM & Paul.
:clap

:D He's not wrong!

Funnily enough, just got round to re-fitting the engine last weekend. Steve @ Scriminger's (in fact, Steve Scriminger, to give him his full name... :o ) recommended Waxoyl (sp?) on the engine mounts.

Whatever, I'll be removing and re-doing mine on a regular basis from now on.... :augie

GREAT TO SEE YOUR USING THE BIKE STEVE !

Hi Steve, Must say youve done that correctly. Yes, when I remove the nuts in commissioning, they get lubed before re-assembly. Never took the rod out though. Hmmm! Another job on this list for the future me thinks, it keeps growing. Happy "Basicing" (I just made a word up!)
So you sorted the Pedantic Sod, at the DVLA then?
They are wrong you know!
HOW MANY MEMBERS HAVE REGISTERED IMPORTS, AND BEEN ASKED TO CHANGE THE SPEEDO TO A MPH BEFORE THEY WILL DO IT?After its passed the MOT? Id love to know, Has something changed? Or did Steve come across a "jobsworth"? Anybody got a copy of their rule book. Maybe this should be a new thread~?
I am aware of what the Con and Use Regs say.
Gary
