...I got back from a long trip (4 weeks) overseas yesterday, so took the bike out this morning. It was fine for the first 15 miles. Then, when pulling out for an overtake, the engine seemed to stutter, alomst like it wanted to stall - but it didn't.

If I cruised or accelerated gently it was fine, but if I accelerated hard from low revs the bike did this weird stuttering.

The range was down to 40 miles so I was wondering if it was simply running out of fuel early. So I filled up but the issue was still there...

On the ride home (about 25 miles), it seemed that it was slowly getting better and becoming harder to make the bike do it. The only conclusion I can reach is that leaving the bike with only a small amount of fuel in an Adv tank (ie lots of space to vapourize) means it takes less time for the fuel to go bad. In this case 4 weeks!

Tomorrow, I will take the bike for a thorough thrashing and see where it's at but I wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

Thoughts?

Posting it in the 1200GS section might give a clue. Careful scrutiny of the post leads to draw the conclusuon that it's a 1200GS Adventure.

Or am I missing something?

Your missing something .............. check his profile. He doesn't have a 1200 so posting in the 1200 section isn't a clue - clever sh!te :D

Hence my problem.

I could add that's an 06 in metallic if that helps ;)

Thanks for that.

I can't see fuel going off. Sounds like it may be a spark plug. Let us know what the thrashing did for it. Laid up a the moment after a back op so I'm jealous and not a little frustrated. :(

I've had fuel go off in my Dakar which gets left without running for quite a bit of time. So when you say you can't see it going off, what do you mean?

Sorry to hear your off the road - I hate when I'm away and can't ride. Hope you get well soon :thumb2

stick coils !!

I guess I'm supposed to know what those are...

broken spark plug for sure. Exactly the same symptoms i have very recently had.

Stupid questions: a) will it be obvious which one(s) is broken when I take them out? b) any recommendations as to what to buy as replacements?

Thanks! :thumb2

The original twin spark boxer used the original coil and longer leads to make the lower spark plugs spark a degree and a gnats nadger after the main spark plugs in which the current was generated in a spark plug cap which had the coil built in and that looked like a long stick Hence Stick coils

Part Numba's 12137680644 for 2 main coils

Sounds like plugs which should be your 1st port of call. If not, an HT lead is probably shot.

Had the same issue with my 1100 and I would take the HD leads off, check if they are OK, clean them and spay with WD40. Take the plugs out and check for cracks etc. Give me a call in the morning if you need to:thumb

Your fuel will not go off in 4 weeks:eek:

Thanks Bilks :thumb

If I'm gonna have half a chance of going for a play off-road tomorrow morning, I should get up early and get myself to NOG in case I need to get an HT lead(s). I'm assuming they would have these kind of parts in stock... right?

I will no doubt be calling for hints and tips... and to ask you to come join us for a play in the lanes :thumb

Funnily enough just had a very similar thing on my 1200, took it to the stealership (it recently had its 6000 service) and the engineers first thought it was the coils, however, it wasn't.
It turned out to be a Kit Kat wrapper, it had found its way down the inlet pipe and then lodged itself at the entrance to the K+N filter, very similar symptons, under partial throttle everything OK, try and give it the berries and it hesitated as if the TCS was cutting in.

Sounds the wrapper must've got in there during the service

I'm guessing they can run a diagnostic to check the coils, leads etc... right?

Plugs for sure --- I had exactly the same thing on my 1200GS a couple of weeks ago. From cold it misfired under heavy acceleration and got better as it got hot. I thought it was coils and all sorts of things, turned out to be one dicky plug !!

So I got up nice and early to go to North Oxford BMW hoping that they could quickly replace what ever was faulty enabling me to still go for a play in the lanes today... And fair play, the guys at NOG - before you know it, they took the bike straight in and I was trying on their Sale gear while drinking their coffee.

However, they ran the diagnostics and confirmed that it is not the plugs... or the coils :( In fact all the diagnostics could tell them is that there is definitely a fault (one cylinder is running 60% cooler than the other) and that they don't know what it is :nenau So they're going to have to keep the bike a while they work out what's wrong with it.

Being the top guys that NOG are, they managed to find me a bike to ride home. Steve's last words were: "Don't take it off-road..." :D
