...I'm becoming a full member of the GS brigade.

I've had the final drive bearing give up 700 miles from home (Ok that was the RT but it still counts);
I've had the gearbox/clutch splines strip 70 miles from home;
I've dropped it off road and found it almost impossible to pick up;
I've got it stuck axle deep in sticky mud on Salisbury Plain in a red flag zone and had to dig it out with my hands;
The ABS lights keep on blinking at me on most, not all, rides.

Now it seems I'm in need of a new HAL sensor.

I noticed a backfire a few miles from home last week so I changed the spark plugs (Iridium) and air filter(K&N) that have done 33,000 miles just to see if it was that. Nope.

I took the bike to my spanner guy round the corner to get seized brake calipers unseized and he found HAL sensor error codes when he plugged it into the diagnostic unit - I wanted to see if there were any ABS errors because I'm sick of the blinking lights. I digress, he reckons my little backfire could be due to the HAL sensor being on it's way out.

So, I'll get and fit a new one as soon as I can. Got the last 2 weeks of December off work so I'll be fettling to pass the time.

Like I said, I'll be a full GS (or rather R1150xx) member soon.

In all of the years I had Kawasaki's I never had to do the amount of fettling these BMW's require. Mind you, owning the BMW's is proving to be much more of an adventure.
Mind you, I say that whilst sitting at home all warm and cosy in my office. I use different and more colourful words when, for example, broken down in a layby at 3pm on a rainy Sunday in the wilds of Scotland and 700 miles from home.

What else do I need to tick off on the list to join this club?

Ok, off to the motorworks website now.

Regards

Rob C

An awful lot of what appear to be failed Hall sensor problems are actually just crispy sub looms to the unit or bad connections thereof.

Worth a looksee mate.

Tarka,
Crispy wiring would throw a HAL sensor error code?

Just to add to the list of membership prerequisites:

Seized starter motor - needed cleaning;
Dislodged magnets in the starter motor - needed glue;

Regards

All that crap scared me off this bike few years ago when I was at last time. But the pervert that I am Iam at it again and bought one couple of months ago. Nothing has happened yet but this makes me scared again.

When my Hall sensor died.. classic symptoms. a bouncy rev counter and a dead engine. I did consider taking the faulty one out and attempting to fix it. But... decided against and replaced it with a new one.

As that's been the only fault I've had thats killed the bike in over 13 years.. it wasn't really much of a sacrifice.

seems pretty obvious to me that repairing the Hall Sensor isn't appropriate long term.. If it was then there would be at least SOMEONE offering this as a service. Similar to the refurb service motorworks offer for the Valeo.

Given the price of the thing you would think there was a tidy profit to be made. but no. no-one does. nor ever has.. despite much talk over the years and the fact that the parts are cheap.. dirt cheap if bought in bulk: Heat resistant cable and the sensors from honeywell.

that in itself speaks volumes.

Try This Maybe?

If any one wants to try a bit of international trading with THESE people selling THIS then I'm in for a couple. Apparently 10 Euro each.

I haven't yet checked the complete compatibilty and spec's between the original and this replacement but they do claim it is a direct replacement. It will also require mounting and wiring in of course.

If you do a search you'll find that some people have had problems with the CY copy, where the engine will not rev properly.

The Honeywell sensor can be bought easily in the US, and occasionally here in the UK from Farnell.

Over the last 10 years i have had a few probs with my BM's but before that I owned a few Honda's and they were just boring...:augie:D No honestly i have never had a show stopper on a BM and i had a few electricals on the Honda's. My old Yam XJ9 was pretty bulletproof and Suzukis had quite a few probs...

The thing with BM's is that they are mostly fixable but your run seems to be a patience trier for sure...
